Reminder of aims: • To help raise the number of young people in London studying STEM subjects at school and college • To help ensure that these individuals have the relevant skills so that they can access opportunities in the modern economy • To assist in addressing STEM-related employment needs of the capital • To help ensure that the young people engaging in STEM subjects and following STEM-related careers reflect the diversity of our capital city.
Some of the developments • Formation of Advisory Group • Launch event January 07 • Development of STEM support website • STEM supporting WRL event June 07 • STEM integration event June 07 • Support for courses and workshops • STEM Summer schools
Mapping STEM in London • Carried out in Spring 07 • Interviews carried out with: • 9 Local Authority Advisers or Strategy Consultants; • 7 representatives of largely Government funded organizations; • 14 representatives of independent STEM organizations.

The main themes/recommendations from the mapping included: • Facilitating communication, both formally and informally. This to be achieved in different ways including bringing together the STEM partners, spreading good practice (between schools and colleges) and maintaining the STEM portal. • Addressing the need for STEM forums through a number of focused themed groups e.g. Senior Leadership teams.

STEM Forum plans Other invites to LA or regional events are very welcome, particularly relating to School Governors or 14-19 developments.
Other ongoing developments • Raising awareness – through meetings supporting networks (e.g. SSAT and Secondary National Strategy (SNS) regional meetings) • STEM Spring/Summer schools • Support for appropriate events with a vocational/ applied focus (e.g. ‘The New Diplomas: what do they mean for STEM?’ event at SLC London) • Continued development of website
