  6. On your desk: • I.N. • Pencil/Pen • PRIDE Cards Bell Work 1/28/14 How do you think scientists divide the LIVING organisms in the ocean up? Please explain and give examples. How do you think scientists divide the NON-LIVING (water, sand, rocks) organisms in the ocean up? Please explain and give examples.

  7. The World’s Oceans 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by ocean water. 7

  8. Oceans • The oceans are the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Arctic. • All the oceans and seas are actually one continuous body of water. 8

  9. Oceans • Scientists believe that the ocean was formed when volcanoes erupted giving off water vapor. • Over millions of years the vapor cooled and rained into low areas called basins. 9

  10. Properties of Ocean Water • Ocean water is a mixture of gases • oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen • ....and solids (dissolved salt!) • The salts come from rocks and erupting volcanoes 10

  11. Salinity • Salinity describes the amount of dissolved salt in the ocean. • The average salinity of ocean is 33-35 parts per thousand. 11

  12. Salinity Levels • The salinity is lower in areas where freshwater rivers run into the ocean. 12

  13. Answer the following in your notes 1. Identify the origin of the water in the Earth’s oceans. 2. Explain how salt gets into seawater. 13

  14. Tides • Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun. • Although the sun is bigger in mass, the moon is closer, so the moon has a greater effect than the sun. 14

  15. High and Low Tides • The earth rotates it passes under the moon. • The part of the earth that is passing under the moon will have a high tide and so will the area directly on the other side of the globe. • The areas in between will have low tide. 15

  16. Tidal Range The tidal range is the difference between the level of the ocean at high and low tide. 16

  17. Groups of Marine Life

  18. Three Groups 1. Plankton- organisms that drift freely near the ocean’s surface.

  19. Three Groups 2. Nekton- organisms that swim actively in open water.

  20. Three Groups 3. Benthos- organisms that live at the bottom of the ocean.

  21. Warm-up 1/29/14 • On your desk: • I.N. • Pencil/Pen • PRIDE Cards 1. What is salinity? Salinity describes the amount of dissolved salt in the ocean. 2. What is the average salinity of the ocean? 33-35 parts per thousand

  22. Ocean Environments • The Pelagic Environment- the region near the surface of the ocean and at the middle depths. • Neritic Zone • Oceanic Zone • The Benthic Environment- the region near the bottom of the ocean • Intertidal Zone • Sublittoral Zone • Bathyal Zone • Abyssal Zone • Hadal Zone

  23. Ocean Environments It is time to…… Do some research….. AND…… Make a FOLDABLE!!!!!

  29. Warm-up 1/28/13 • Does the sun or the moon have a greater effect on tides? Why? • The moon! The sun is bigger in mass, but the moon is closer, so it has a greater effect than the sun. • What causes tides? • The gravitational pull of the moon and the sun.
