Rise of Nationalities • Nationality: identity w/ a group who share legal attachment and personal allegiance to a particular country • Bonds in voting, passport, and civic duties. • NATION-STATES: a territory that corresponds to that with is occupied by a particular ethnicity • SELF DETERMINATION: Ethnicities have the right to determine own government

  4. DENMARK • Long history… territory corresponds with ethnicity. • 10% of the Danes are immigrants from Turkey & Yugoslavia • Faeroe Islands • KalaallitNunaat

  5. Nation-States in Europe • 19th century ethnicities formed modern nation-states. • Germany was a collection of 300 states until 1871. • National Socialists attempted to create one nation based on German language. • Post WWII: Germany divided. • 1990: Germany unified

  6. Nationalism • Used to hold a the loyalty of the citizens together. Exalt own nation above all others.
