Do Now 1. What is the major environmental factor limiting the numbers of autotrophs at great depths in the ocean? a. type of seafloor b. amount of light c. availability of minerals d. absence of biotic factors 2. A certain plant requires moisture, oxygen, carbon dioxide, light, and minerals in order to survive. This statement shows that a living organism depends on: a. biotic factors b. abiotic factors c. symbiotic relationships d. carnivore-herbivore relationships

Test Reflection • Directions: Using your Mastery Tracker (slip of paper) record your percent for each topic. • If you earned 80% or higher on a topic, put a *STAR* next to the box. • If you earned 64% or lower on a topic, HIGHLIGHT the box with a marker. • Answer the Reflection Questions (#1-#9). • Estimate Time: 10 Minutes
Today’s Goal Aim: How can I distinguish between living and non-living things? Learning Objectives: Students will gather evidence and develop criteria to decide if something is living or non-living. Students will recognize that living things grow, reproduce, gather nutrients, excrete wastes, exchange gas, etc.
INM • All living things are able to perform these things… Reproduction Respiration Response/Movement Growth Excretion of wastes Nutrition (Intake of Nutrients) Transport nutrients/wastes • How to remember? RRRGENT (REGENTS)
INM • The smallest thing that can perform all of these things is the CELL. It is the basic unit of life! • Organelles alone cannot perform all of the functions!
Activity #1-Characteristics of Living Things • Directions: Using the Power Point, come up with your own definition of what living things can do. • Estimated Time: 5 Minutes
Activity # 2 – Is It Alive? • Directions: Watch the video. Indicate which characteristics of life that apply to each thing by putting a X in the appropriate column. Decide if each thing is biotic or abiotic. • Estimated Time: 5 Minutes
Discussion Questions • What characteristics did ALL of the living things have in common? • Did any non-living things possess some of the same characteristics as living things? Which ones? • Are all things that move "alive”? • How is the movement of living things different from the movement of nonliving things? • Do all living things eat? • Plants don't eat but they need energy. Where do they get it?
Activity # 3 – “Is It Alive?” Article • Directions: Read the article “Is It Alive?”and answer the questions. • Estimated Time: 10 Minutes
Extension Activity • Directions: Watch the trailer to the 2001 film, Artificial Intelligence. In groups, debate whether a robot like in the movie would be considered living or non-living. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqS83f-NUww
