2. Outline • Welcome, introductions, what we hope to accomplish • Brief terminology review • Overview of NTTA estimation strategy • What data are necessary? What data do you have? • Applies to both regular NTA by sex and NTTA (National Time Transfer Accounts) by sex • Time Use Survey Questionnaire

3. Goals • Estimate age profiles of production and consumption of time by sex • Both time and monetary units • Estimate NTA labor income and consumption age profiles by sex • Discuss strategy for computing other NTA and NTTA age profiles • Transfers, asset-based reallocations

4. Brief Terminology Review • NTA vs. NTTA • Age shape + macro control = age profile • National accounts, system of national accounts (SNA) • Household • Household production/unpaid work/time use/productive time • Market work/market time

5. NTTA Estimation Strategy • Production • Get available time use survey, learn to use it • Identify time spent on 11 different household productive activities • Compute age- and sex-specific average time spent in those activities • Find appropriate wages to impute for 11 activities • Consumption • Impute age of consumption of time produced based on assumptions and time use survey definitions • Compute age- and sex-specific average time consumed

Data for NTA by Sex • National account data (for computing macro controls) • Only computed for total population (no controls by sex) • Household survey • Nationally representative • Includes income and consumption (although some countries use different surveys for different profiles) • Has household roster by age and sex (and other categories of interest) • Administrative or other supplementary age shape data • Population Data • By age and sex

7. Data for NTTA by Sex • No national account data • But other researchers may have estimated household production • Time use survey • Nationally representative • Complete household roster by age and sex, even for those in the household who do not give time use information • Same time period as NTA estimates, if possible • Sample represents a calendar year • Wage data • Results of national survey of wages by occupation • If that is not available, can use NTA household survey if sufficiently detailed occupation data is included and survey is large enough • Population data (same as for NTA)

8. Time Use Survey Questionnaire • When is the year of your survey? During what months were the actual interviews conducted? • How many respondents are there in the survey? • Is it nationally representative, or just for a sub-region or group in the country? • What time period are respondents asked to account for? A day? A week? • How many time respondents per household? Do you know the age and sex of others in the respondents’ households, or just the respondent? • What is the name of the survey weight variable you will use to generate accurate age- and sex-specific means? • Can respondents indicate multiple activities for a single unit of time, or do they have to designate just one activity at a time? • Do the hours in a day add up to 24 for each respondent, or is it possible for people to answer so that they account for more or less than 24 hours in a day? • For childcare activity variables, is there an age range specified for the children? Similarly, is there an age range given for elder care or care for other adults?

9. Lab Session 1 • Produce a plot of average time accounted for in all activities (total time) • By age and sex • Make sure to use survey weights if available • Example for US 2009 (imputes time to force it to equal 24 hours/day for everyone):
