Our perceptions often causes stereotyping. • Stereotyping: Assuming that all members of a demographic category are alike in all respects. • Why do we stereotype? • How can we overcome stereotyping? • *Shoe activity • Each group will get a “shoe.” Fill out the questions on your worksheet. Fun with perception • Perception involves looking deeper into a person, situation, image, or any aspect of society. • Our perception shapes our communication in how we choose what to say (encoding and message) and how we interpret (decoding) what others say and do. • It’s important to be open minded and try to see beyond what’s right in front of us on the surface.
