The Tlingits

3. Today we are making my families tribe house. We started by cutting down cedar trees and then made cedar planks. Then we started to make the frame of our house, over the frame we placed cedar planks up the side of the frame up to the low sloped peaked roof. 4. Today we were making my fathers new clothes. Most men in my tribe wear breech cloths, that is what we are making. Tomorrow we will make my mothers new short skirt. We will have to take bark off cedar trees tomorrow to make it. Where some of my friends live further inland they have to make and wear Athabaskanstyle pants with moccasins attachedthe their pants. 5. Today we are fishing for food. I am learning by the lead of my father to be able to catch some fish and sea-mammals. The men of my tribe were able to catch some sea mammals and fish in their canoes, I am learning from my father. I get to see how he does it because I am sitting right next to him. Tomorrow we are going to hunt deer, mountain goats, and birds. My friends tribe that is more inland have to hunt big game for food, I don’t really like the way they cook their animals, it grosses me out. My sister is learning how to find berries and to determine weather They are poisonous or not, tomorrow she is going to gather shellfish. 6. DING! I just scored a point in basket ball. We like to do almost everything that you guys like to do, like basket ball. The children of my tribe like to do what you like to do. We play games like basket ball with eachother, we go to school to learn, and we do chores around the house. My tribes transportation characteristic is that we made canoes to get around to places, the downside of this is that we can only use them in rivers . Today we have to make my families dugout canoe. We started by hollowing out some cedar and spruce we chopped down yesterday.

8. Today we are going on a nature tour of the terrain we live in. We are journeying the Seacoast of our area right now, tomorrow we will journey through the forests, and the next day we will rock climb glacial valleys, then the next day after the next we will swim in rivers

9. Today we are going to take a tour given from the elders of my tribe because they are the most wise, we are learning about the different animals in our ecosystem. One of the animals of the ecosystem I live in is the brown bear.

10. Today we are planting plants. We will be planting the Fireweed (not real fire, it is the REAL name), the Dwarf Fireweed, the Nootka Lupine, Pixie Eye Primrose, Spruce and Cedar trees, and Dandelions. Fireweed     Image Credit: http://www.dontveter.com/howtogrow/fireweed.html

11. Today we are going to learn about the common animals, we are going on another Nature tour, but this time it is on animals. “Ooooh! Look!” I yelled, there was a brown bear! Then someone else shouted,”Look! A brown bear!” Then I shouted,”Look! A coyote!” Then my mom shouted, “Look! A sitka black tailed deer!”

13. Brrrr! It is freezing cold out here I thought. I walked inside my house and wrapped myself in a warm blanket. The temperatures here during December can get as cold as 21*F! Right now it feels like 25*F, and it is really cold! The weather during winter, not only in December it can range from, (this is November-February) 28-27 degrees in Anchorage, Alaska.

14. Ahh, I thought while I was sunbathing on the beach. Then I felt the waves lapping at my feet, next thing I know I am under water! During the summer (May-September) the temperatures can get as high as 65*F! And then as low as 45*F.

15. “WOW!” I exclaimed when I saw our 85 pound Cabbage we grew, “That is a HUGE cabbage!” “During the summer, the perfect temperature for cabbage makes it grow really large,” my mom explained. Image Credit: http://www.alaska.com/about/weather/

16. Do you remember when I told you about the clothes further inland for the men? For the men during winter they wear the long athabaskan pants with a animal hide coat. The women wear long dresses. We make our houses like basically closed off from the outside so no cold can get in.

18. My future plans are to help my dad more often, learn how to hunt better, try to be the tribe leader’s apprentice, and to help with the expansion of my tribe.

19. The outlook for my tribe and I looks pretty good, the tribe leader accepted my request, everyone helped with the expansion, and we are all happy! 

20. Well, I guess I have only one final thought, it is to have more journal entries next time I do this. 
