Where the Tlingit live The Tlingit live in the Southern coast of Alaska and Northern coast of British Columbia[it is called the Tlingit culture region].
Tlingit’s Homes Tlingit’s used large planks of wood to make large homes. They often carved figures into doorways of their homes. Tlingits used these homes during winter time. In the summer they moved to smaller wooden homes near hunting and fishing grounds.
Tlingit’s Potlatch A potlatch is a feast held to celebrate important events such as a wedding, birth, or a death. A potlatch also shows a family’s importance to their community. During the potlatch people put on masks and participated in traditional dances. Potlatches could last up to 12 days. The potlatch is still an important part of the Tlingit culture. Many modern potlatches are held during the weekend so guests do not have to miss school or work.
Chilkat Blankets A Chilkat blanket is one of the most prized product of the Tlingits. It was traditionally woven from the dyed skin of mountain goat or sheep. Chilkat blankets are very colorful and detailed. Chilkat blankets can have shapes and animals on them. Just as a totem pole, Chilkat blankets tell the story of a family with their designs.
