  2. Symbols • What is symbolism? • What are lights symbolic of? • What is brightness symbolic of? • What do the lights represent in music? • Candles are extremely common and other forms of light, whether fire or other, are also used in ceremony. Why?

  3. Light – Find a supporting quote. • From the very first page Equality makes this clear to usthat light is a symbol. • The flame of the candle. • It is a stagnant and dark time, suggesting the lack of growth and enlightenment in this society. Light is representative of truth and drawing attention to details which would thus lead to individuality instead of uniformity. • In that sense the society has been stripped of freedom and given dull flickering candles. • Think of it as if you were going into your basement alone and you had to do so without light. Equality loses his fear to speak when he discovers light in the tunnel. He is enlightened to the fact that what he has done is special and important and must be given to all others. • The symbol of light is also seen in his name for the Golden one, a descriptive word that implies brightness. This shows his hope to escape the darkness that this society has trapped him in.

  4. Read 3 and 4 • Character Development: Golden One and Equality 7-2521 • What might the light that Equality discovers represent or be symbolic of? Explain your answer and rationalize why you believe this. • What is the significance of the names “Unconquered” and “The Golden One.” • What do you think of upon hearing the word ‘unconquered’? • What about the word ‘golden’? • How would these names relate to the characters of Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000? • How is Equality changing? • How does the name “Unconquered” tell us that Equality is changing even further?

  5. Rename One Another • Get with a partner and rename one another. Make sure that the name represents what you know of this person and their personal doctrines. • Tell your partner’s new name, and why they chose that name.
