What is Huntington’s Disease? • Huntington’s Disease is an adult onset disease that is characterized by progressive mental, physical , and cell deterioration. • Huntington’s is an inherited and degenerative brain disorder which affects the body and mind.
Symptoms • Symptoms include: • Clumsiness • Slurred Speech • Depression • Irritability • Apathy • Involuntary Movements • Cognitive losses include intellectual speed and attention. • Short term memory
How Can You Cure Huntington’s? • At the present moment there is no cure for Huntington’s Disease. • By continuing to increase our investment in both clinical and basic HD research each year, breakthroughs in treatment - and a cure - will be forthcoming. • Medications are given to control symptoms. • Drugs such as Haloperidol and Clonazepam are prescribed for hulicinations and violent outbursts.
Who Can Get Huntington’s Disease? • Since this is an inherited disease each child of an affected parent has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease. • More than a quarter of a million Americans have HD or are "at risk" of inheriting the disease from an affected parent. • HD affects as many people as Hemophilia, Cystic Fibrosis or muscular dystrophy. • It affects males and females equally and crosses all ethnic and racial boundaries
At What Age Does It Start? • It typically begins in mid-life, between the ages of 30 and 45, though it may occur as early as the age of 2. • Children who develop the juvenile form of the disease rarely live to adulthood
What Are Some Major Effects of This Disease? • Major effects are mood swings or a person becomes uncharacteristically irritable, apathic, passive, depressed or angry.
