Mongolia: Mental Health issue • There are over 23,443 people with mental illness in Mongolia /according to CBR survey 2008: Place: 6/; • 32% of them live in urban area; • 68% of them live in rural area; • There is a National Center for Mental Health in Ulaanbaatar city and Mental health department in each Province Hospital;
Challenges: Persons with mental illness • Around 70 – 80% is discriminated; • Stay at home; • No jobs; • Bad attitude from the general populations; • Feeling alone; • They are treated as someone who are need to be stayed far from the people;
CHALLENGES: FAMILY MEMBERS • No understanding; • Don’t believe them that their family member can do something; • Get bored; • No active; • Don’t know how to deal with their children;
CBR contribution to Mental Health • We have two good examples: • Hovd province (1400 km in the west) • Suhbaatar province (600 km in the east)
HOVD PROVINCE • CBR - 1998 • Total population: 85897 • Number of PWD: 4310 • Number of persons with mental illness: 210 • 40% live in the province center
Hovd PROVINCE: Micro project • Micro project to integrate persons with mental illness in the community was iitiated in 2003 with the financial support of AIFO; • Project venue: Mental Health department at the Regional Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Hovd aimag • Beneficiaries: 12 patients
HOVD PROVINCE: ACTIVITIES • Vegetable (potato) growing; • “Ger” Canteen at the Aimag Hospital; • Producing felt products like slippers; • Beads products; • Knitting; • Stitching;
HOVD PROVINCE: RESULT • Family members appreciated the action and started to help to the doctor; • Patients’ disease severity is getting improved; • The repetition of the disease is getting far; • The group had owned their land for vegetable cultivation;
SUHBAATAR PROVINCE: • CBR - 2008 (EU co-funded project); • Total population: 53785 • Number of PWD: 2113 • Number of persons with mental illness: 90 • 60 % live in the aimag center
SUHBAATAR PROVINCE: Micro project • A micro project to integrate persons with mental disorders in the community was started in 2008 with the financial support of AIFO and EU project; • Project venue: Mental Health department at the Province Hospital • Beneficiaries: 15 patients
SUHBAATAR PROVINCE: ACTIVITIES • Producing safety waste box for the use of hospital using the old boxes of milk; • Making a bed sheet and pillow using the residual cotton;
SUHBAATAR PROVINCE: RESULT • The 15 patients are meeting in every Monday, Wednesday and Friday regularly. • The patients help the medical staff to make Safety waste box. Up-to-date the patients had made 50 safety boxes. • The Province hospital buys the boxes. One box costs 450 tugriks (0,25 euro) and earned 22500 tugriks (12 euro). • Very important: they share their life experience and they are feeling much relaxing.
