10. At Nestlé Waters NA, The Focus on Environmental Sustainability Started Ten Years Ago In 1976, our heritage began with Perrier. Our association with natural mineral water established us as company that is close to earth. From a business standpoint, we recognized that we would have to protect springs from pollution, develop stable spring sources and keep water clean for our product to taste good.
In the 1980s, business started to expand as we began acquiring regional spring waters and we began to focus on water resources: monitoring them, assuring stability, abundance, close to nature, hiring geology team, etc., need access to water…
In 1989, with the introduction of PET bottles, our business began to grow and expand rapidly.
By 1990, we were a hodge-podge of companies with no real cohesive culture.
When Kim came on board in 1992, he came with a mission to create a culture of values, that were not just values to be hung on a wall, but values were applicable to our work and everyday lives. He came aboard determined to create a culture that would enable a cohesive organization to emerge. In 1976, our heritage began with Perrier. 11. Our supply chain management is best in class.
But stakeholders looking at a much broader set of activities, so we brought in some of the world’s leading sustainability experts.
(advance)
Looked at our whole operation (VALUE CHAIN), from upstream suppliers to sourcing to production to logistics and product end of life. Looked at our business the way our stakeholders look at our business…beyond our plant & spring borders. Some of our customers are now asking for OUR advice!
Our goal is to USE OUR EXPERTISE IN EFFICIENCY TO FOCUS ON CARBON & OTHER IMPACTS, TO save money, and address stakeholder concerns about our environmental footprint.
We identified three priority areas to focus on:
1. Better recycling/sustainable packaging
2. REDUCING OUR CARBON/ENERGY FOOTPRINT
3. Improving WATER EFFICIENCY/SUSTAINABILITY

-25% versus our 0.5L bottle ten years ago
-30% versus similar bottles
Additional 8% reduction planned for 2009 for total 16% reduction 2008 – 2009. CHRISTINE NOTE THAT THE GOALS ON THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE & OTHERS ARE NOT YET PUBLIC. LET’S MAKE SURE WE GET FINAL HP/KIM SIGN OFF BEFORE PRIME TIME!

19. To help reduce idling, a driver can choose to use truck stop electrification instead of idling the truck over-night or during times when a driver needs to rest. Some benefits include less wear and tear on the engine, fuel savings and better night sleep for the driver. To help reduce idling, a driver can choose to use truck stop electrification instead of idling the truck over-night or during times when a driver needs to rest. NPP purchases about 10% of food cans in the U.S.
Equivalent to:
39,514 Tons of Aluminum (86%)
32,157 Tons of Steel (14%)
All Cans 100% Recyclable
28. By our estimation, only 15% of NPP’s cans are recycled
The Result:
60,000 tons of recyclable material goes to landfills each Year
* If NPP can help increase can recycling to 50%, (in line with
U.S. average), the benefits would be substantial:
Save 53 million gallons of fuel
Avoid 117,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions
Avoid 3,000 tons of sulfur dioxide & nitrogen oxide
Avoid land filling, littering or incinerating 30,000 tons
(468,000 cubic yards) of aluminum.
29. Challenges Obstacles to recycling
Confusion
Consumer awareness
Convenience
Availability of recycling programs nationwide
Focus Areas Include:
Working with Marketing and Packaging to increase on-label/on-pack presence of recycling symbol/message
Partnering with our customers to educate consumers in aisle and out-of store
