Arteries blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from the lungs to deliver oxygen to the cells; oxygen makes blood red The oxygen-rich blood goes to the capillaries where the oxygen leaves the arteries and goes into the cells
Veins blood vessels that carry oxygen-poor blood away from the cells and back to the lungs to get more oxygen; the lack of oxygen makes the blood blue The oxygen-poor blood in the capillaries now absorbs waste CO2 and takes it back to the lungs to be exhaled
Capillaries the smallest blood vessels in the body; the place where O2 and CO2 are exchanged As the oxygen leaves the capillary turns from red to blue Capillaries are everywhere in the body, not just in the head as this picture would imply
What makes up blood? • Red Blood Cells = carry oxygen (then turn blue when they lose their oxygen) • White Blood Cells = fight infection (A.K.A. leucocytes) • Platelets = irregular shape helps to clot the blood • Plasma = clear, liquid part of blood, the most abundant part of blood
