The Americas • Nomads migrated from Asia to North America across the land bridge at the Bering Strait about 30,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. • The Nomads followed and hunted the Wholly Mammoth and other migrating animals. • Eventually, the Nomads spread across North America, down through Central America, and into South America.
Mesoamerican Civilizations Olmecs • The Olmecs were believed to be the earliest American civilization. They emerged in the tropical rain forests along the Mexican Gulf Coast about 1400 B.C. and lasted until 500 B.C. • The Olmecs were polytheistic. • The Olmecs did not have cities. Rather, they built temples at religious centers in the forests.

Mayan Civilization • The Mayas settled in what became present day Guatemala in Central America. • They built cities and temples as well as pyramids for religious ceremonies. • Polytheistic - The Mayas practiced blood sacrifices.
Each city had a chief and a well organized government. • Achievements included hieroglyphics, astronomy (365 day solar calendar), number system (zero) and architecture (pyramids/temples).
Aztecs1200 – 1521 • Located in Central America - present day Mexico • Well organized government with chief ruler • Capital city was Tenochtitlan - present day Mexico City
Polytheistic, human sacrifices made to the Sun god, Huitzilopochtli, on a daily basis • Achievements - in medicine with herbs to treat illness, set bones, and filling dental cavities; in agriculture - grew corn and invented tacos • Defeated by Cortez and Spanish conquerors in 1521
Incan Empire1300 - 1525 • Andes Mountains and Pacific Coast of South America • Incan god king had absolute power • Polytheistic, worshiped many gods of nature • Lived in small cities atop mountains
Achievements – 12,000 mile network of roads, metal working, surgery on skull, early form of anesthesia • Spanish invaders destroyed the Incas
