  1. What I HAVE LEARNED IN web Design Sabrina Puglisi 9/21/16 311 Ms. Mason/ Ms. Blakey

  2. Learning about the internet • Overall, in this Web Design class, I learned the basic functions and structure of the Internet, such as websites and web browsers. This class has helped me have a better understanding of the tool I use very often for both work and fun. I hope to understand it well enough to have a job in computers and using the Internet. • The Internet is basically comprised of multiple networks and connections that are able to help communicate with others from around the world. It has become a very important part of our lives in many subjects, such as business and fun. It is used in many different platforms, especially computers and phones. • Web browsers are also an important part in navigating around the Internet and to websites. It is a program to read codes, like HTML, and presenting it as websites we’re familiar with. They are based on browser engines, and the most popular ones used today to find webpages are Google and Opera.

  3. Websites • Another interesting thing about this class was the course on how to create websites and webpages. I had hoped to learn to create a blog or other kinds of websites through the practice of coding languages, such as HTML. I find it a very practical subject to learn about and use later in life. • A website and a webpage are both different. A website is the entirety of the site, composed of webpages. It is simply a bundle of information, such as pictures and text, created and made interactive through the use of coding. It can be found by searching with a browser, and is very handy in sharing information you want to show to multiple people. Websites are used everywhere on the Internet, though all used differently for each subject. • Webpages, on the other hand are the components of a website, also sharing information in a neat and readable way. CSS is often used to craft the design and layout of a page. There can be many pages on a site serving different purposes, and are often useful for helping the viewer navigate through the site. They are often used in sharing information and links in a website, such as the news site Forbes.

  4. Basic Coding • I’ve learned many things about computers and how they work with coding in this class and its activities. I learned about the layout of websites, and how to design them with CSS and HTML. I looked up information on coding programs such as these to test my skills and improve my understanding. • CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) are both programming languages that specialize in formatting the design and features of a website, such as the website’s text font. CSS controls the layout of a website and it’s features, while HTML tags text files to enable intricate webpage features like color or fonts. • They interact when CSS programs describe how HTML elements, like pictures, are displayed on screen on a computer. These two are important because they help control and design an appealing website. These programs’ results are used as visual designs on almost every Internet site, like social media blogs.

  5. Scripts and other terms • In this class, I had found out about other, more advanced forms of technology and scripting. I want to learn them to both better my understanding of these languages and to be able to create websites and other features with these skills. One of the features I have found out about include DHTML and PHP scripts. • DHTML (Dynamic HTML) is not a coding language, but instead a large combination of HTML and style sheets. They are often important to use in interactive websites, that feature content like animations. They also support programs like JavaScript to manipulate HTML elements. DHTML is usually used in big, interactive sites with many forms of content, like the news site, MSN. • PHP, on the other hand, is a scripting language, a programming language that supports coding instructions, or scripts. PHP is an essential tool in developing interactive sites, as it is mainly used for web development. It typically has HTML tags and its own scripting code to process and output content, and is often used in large content-managing websites, such as blogs.

  6. WEBSITE FEATURES • I learned more about terms of a website and internet functions that I haven’t fully understood before. I learned insight on features of a website like URLs, or HTTP. I was interested to know how the features on the internet actually worked, and what exactly they did when used. I hoped to understand it better when I have a career in computers. • Firstly, a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is part of a worldwide address of resources on the internet. One part of it indicates an internet protocol, which is the HTTP program, while the second part of it is the name of a website. A URL is important because it’s the main tool in navigating most websites on the internet. It is often used to navigate the internet using the address bar, starting as the term “http://” and containing a website name. • Second, an HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) is a protocol that responds to information given by the URL of a website. It’s important as it helps in finding and transmitting the requested web page in the address bar. Without it, no websites could be properly located. It is represented by the “http” part of a URL, typically in an address bar, and is used for enabling a URL.

  7. WEBSITE FUNCTIONS • I had also learned important functions and tools on the internet. I had made sure to understand it, as it could help me find information and applications to use in school and in homework. Two functions I have found the most helpful is uploading and downloading information. • Downloading is the act of receiving data from the Internet. It is often useful to obtain documents, videos, and pictures. The option to download content to your computer is often used in content-sharing web sites, such as the educational site Quora. • Uploading is the act of data being sent from the computer to the Internet. It’s important since it helps placing information on the internet for others to see, such as on a website. The option to upload is in many applications, like YouTube, and used to upload content to the site.

  8. Internet terms • I’ve learned ways to address certain functions on the internet and computer. I feel it would be useful to know this terminology to understand them better in my career in computer. It would also help to understand how these features work and how to get them to function. I want to get to know better of basic features of the internet, like IP addresses and the ISP. • IP addresses, or “Internet Protocol”, is a essential part of identifying computers and devices. It’s important since it helps locate and identify a particular network on the Internet and helps access the Internet. It’s found in every computer and Internet device and often used within your computer’s programming, and in DNS (Domain Name System) settings. • The ISP (Internet Service Provider) is a technological company that can connect your computer to other platforms ,such as mobile devices, to the Internet. It’s very useful in connecting to the Internet and accessing various applications with different devices. ISP is often used in different forms other than computers, such as wireless broadband and Wi-Fi internet.

  9. Careers • I’ve also learned useful careers I could use my coding and computer knowledge for. One of which, is a front-end developer. A front-end developer uses coding languages and styles such as HTML, JavaScript, and CSS to design and program websites. Often an important role in computers and coding, front-end developers also specializes in ”cross-device functionality”. • This skill is being able to make websites appear in different platforms of technology, such as phones or tablets. It’s important since without this tool, websites would not function properly or appear when used on a device other than a computer. It’s often used in popular websites wanting to appeal to people who use multiple platforms of technology, like phones. • JavaScript, on the other hand, is a coding language that makes websites interactive, or able to be manipulated. It’s an important tool for those who want their website to present animated or interactive content, which has to be working properly to viewers . It’s often used in sites with clickable buttons or pages that often change when interacted with, such as social media like Facebook.

  10. BUSINESS IN COMPUTERS • Finally, I’ve learned about how business works in computers and how it’s used in everyday work. I’ve learned about many essential requirements and features needed in such business, like advertising in the form of websites. I have also discovered business subjects to study about in the future, such as e-commerce and freelance. • E-commerce is the process of buying and purchasing services with the use of the Internet and websites. It’s an important sales aspect of Internet-relying business, as it contains features like electronic fund transferring and other online transactions involving buying products. The usage of e-commerce is often seen in the form of online shops, like Amazon, that regularly update with new products and prices. • A freelancer is a worker who works on the principle of self-employment. One who works as a freelancer has control over their workspace, their projects, and the payments received for doing their job. Many important benefits of being a freelancer is being more efficient in working because of the free control of their work and independence on projects. Freelancers can work in many jobs, such as being an IT freelancer, a computer specialist.
