3. School of Social Work, Mangalore, accredited with ‘A’ Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council in 2004, is managed by the Institute of Social Service, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore. The Institute has been awarded ‘College with Potential for Excellence’.

4. The major objectives of the School are: • To equip students with knowledge and skills to facilitate progressive change in individuals, families, groups, organizations/structures and communities. • To provide human power to work at the grass root level in the field of Social Development and Welfare. • To impart knowledge and skills in social sciences and vocational courses.

5. The College has been promoting academic research as a part of MSW programme ever since the commencement of the programme in 1967. • Doctoral Programme in Social Work offered since 1983 saw a great demand from Ph.D. candidates.

6. RESEARCH CENTRE • The School of Social Work has progressively grown as a centre for action oriented research. • The Department of Research of the college has been actively involved in undertaking sponsored research projects - local, state and national levels.

7. There is an Increasing demand for Research Assistance from the following: • Our own alumni and others for Ph.D. programmes. Those who have completed Social Work and Counselling programmes in particular are seeking admission for research programmes in larger numbers. • From Government Departments/Commissions, Non-Government Agencies and Corporate bodies. • From the various departments as well as extension service units of our college to address the challenges facing the region especially the marginalized groups through action-research. • From those who require data to gain an in-depth understanding of social realities so as to undertake appropriate interventions to inclusive of advocacy attempts at tackling social problems and influencing public policy.

8. 13 students have been awarded with the Ph.D. degree • Two from the faculty are recognized Ph.D. guides and they are Dr. Jacinta D’Souza and Dr. Rameela Shekhar. • At present there are 5 Ph.D. scholars who have registered in this Department and 3 more have submitted their research synopsis.

11. Micro-research Projects with Action implications on the marginalised groups: • ‘A Study of the Vegetable Farmer Women of 25 villages from around the city of Mangalore’. This study led to the formation of an organisation called, ‘Women Vegetable Producers and Headload Vendors’ Cooperative Society with 400 members. It facilitated the continued struggle of women farmers for a market place to sell their products. • ‘A Study on Dairy Farmers of Kulur and surrounding villages’(2002) which was submitted to the Dakshina Kannada Dairy Development Federation, leading to the establishment of a ‘Women’s Dairy Cooperative Society with 150 members. • ‘A Brief Study of the Health of the Residents in the villages around the dumping yard, Vamanjoor’(2002): Copies of which have been shared with Parisarasaktha Okkuta D.K and Green Peace, New Delhi and the City Corporation, Mangalore to pressurise evolution of effective Solid Waste Management System. • A study on the ‘Awareness among the public of D. K. District on the services provided by the Primary Health Centres’ - 2000-2001. The Family Cosmos Forum submitted the findings of the study to the District Health Officer, Dakshina Kannada. • Survey on the ‘Living Conditions of pavement/slum dwellers of Mangalore City with special focus on Street Children’ – 2004, the report of which is submitted to ‘Sanjeevini’, an organisation working with the street children who utilises the same for future course of action. • A Study on the Effectiveness of Internet Exposure Programme organized by the Deputy Commissioner, Dakshina Kannada – November 2004. • A minor research project “Annual rituals in Guru Narasimha Temple” Saligrama • A micro survey on “The Health conditions of migrant women and children of Mangalore City”. • “Women in Police”, A study undertaken jointly by the Department of Research and Department of Criminology, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore. • A study on Level of HIV/AIDS awareness among students of School of Social Work undertaken by Family Cosmos Forum, P.G. Dept. School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore. (2007) • A Study on the Status of Children in Mangalore, a comprehensive study conducted on lifestyle, problems, activities, health issues and education of children in the Corporation limits of Mangalore. • A study of dairy farmers in Moodusede Village, which led to the formation of the dairy cooperative society in the village comprising more than 160 members in January 2007. • Need assessment survey at Honnavar, Uttara Kannada District under taken by Social Change Management Forum, MSW Department (May 2008)

12. School of Social Work is a pioneer Institute in Social Work Education in Karnataka. As there is a great demand for action oriented research especially in the Social Work field, it is imperative that the College now opts for a Research Centre under Autonomy. Moreover the College was recognized for Ph.D. in Social Work since 1983. The College has 9 faculty who have Ph.D. in their respective subjects and have been guiding students for Ph.D., forming a strong resource base for the research centre.
