Grade 3 Reading Assessment • Measuring state-assessable reading GLCE for K-2 • Paired reading selections • Text 1 (8 m.c. items) + Text 2 (8 m.c. items) • 5 cross-text m.c. items • 6-point Response to Reading (2 pages max) • Independent reading selection Text 3 + 8 m.c. items • Total = 35 reading points

Grades 4-8 Reading Assessments • Measuring state-assessable reading GLCE • Paired reading selections • Text 1 (8 m.c. items) + Text 2 (8 m.c. items) • 5 cross-text m.c. items • 6-point Response to Reading (2 pages max) • Independent reading selection Text 3 + 8 m.c. items • Linking text from previous grade + 8 m.c. items • Total = 43 reading points

Grades 4-8 Linking Reading Texts • Linking texts = Text 1, 2, or 3 from previous grade with the associated 8 m.c. items • Approved for and field-tested in lower grade • Not a mistake • To study growth for groups of students • Linking items are scored, and reported, but do not count toward the students’ scale scores or proficiency levels

  5. Grades 3-8 Reading Items/Domains Grade 3 – 35 total points across 3 texts • 29 m.c. items = WS* + NT + IT + CM + CS • 6-point Response to Reading (CM) Grades 4-8 – 43 total points across 4 texts • 37 m.c. items = WS + NT + IT + CM + CS • 6-point Response to Reading (CM) * GLCE code

Writing: Grades 3-8 Writing from Knowledge and Experience • 6-point holistic rubric • Students choose genre, format of response • Two pages max • No resources • Scored as first draft, not polished response Student writing sample • Peer response (4-point rubric) • Five multiple-choice (m.c.) editing and revising items

  7. S07: HSTs in Reading and Writing Seniors get one last shot at MEAP • Reading • Texts 1 and 2 with nine associated m.c. items each • Cross-text: 7 m.c. items, plus one response • Writing • Writing from Knowledge and Experience • Reporting and Reflecting

ACT Reading Items • Items ask students to: • determine main ideas and significant details • understand sequence of events • make comparisons • comprehend cause-effect relationships • determine meaning in context of words, phrases, statements • draw generalizations • analyze author's/narrator's voice/method

ACT WorkKeys: Reading for Information • 33 items, 45 minutes • measures skills used when reading and using written text to do a job • memos, letters, directions, signs, notices, bulletins, policies, regulations • not necessarily well-written or targeted to appropriate audience • all text, no graphics

ACT English 75 multiple-choice items, 45 minutes Includes items that ask students: • to be aware of writing style • about specific portions of underlined text and elements of writing, such as tone or emphasis, in that portion • about whole sections or whole passages with no underlined parts • about more than one aspect of writing

Tips for Improvement • Teach your curriculum year-round! • Don’t limit yourselves to teaching the assessable content. • Don’t “drill and kill” just before the test! • Watch for “Released Items” on our website (www.michigan.gov/meap) • Compare scoring guides to the rumors about how “you, too, can raise your MEAP scores.” • Call us to check on rumors. Rumor control is a big part of our job!
