Water and H2O • Being that water makes up 70% of our planet’s surface it makes sense to understand the atoms that make up the molecule of water. • Water is molecule that is made up of the atoms Hydrogen and Oxygen. • Using the periodic table provided, fill in the information needed:
Elements in Water… • Hydrogen Atomic #: Atomic Mass: # of protons: # of Neutrons: # of Electrons: Group #: Period #:
Elements in Water • Oxygen Atomic #: Atomic Mass: # of protons: # of Neutrons: # of Electrons: Group #: Period #:
Elements in Salt Water (NaCl) • Sodium Atomic #: Atomic Mass: # of protons: # of Neutrons: # of Electrons: Group #: Period #:
Elements in Salt Water (NaCl) • Chlorine Atomic #: Atomic Mass: # of protons: # of Neutrons: # of Electrons: Group #: Period #:
Creating a Molecule • The elements Hydrogen and Oxygen are attracted to each other because of their electron cloud formation.
Creating A Chemical Bond • Every Element has a certain number of Electrons in its outer shell (cloud) • If the outer shell is not filled these electrons are called valence electrons. • This atom has 4 Valence Electrons.
Stable Elements • Each element wants to be stable. • To do this, it must fill each electron spot of its outer level with an electron from another element. • Once the electrons are given and taken, the two elements are know bonded.
Giving or Receiving Electrons…8 is the magic number…. • The valence electrons of an element can be given to another element to help fill the receiving elements empty spaces. • For Example:
The Results of Bonding… • When two or more elements bond they will form a molecule. • This molecule is then called a compound. • A compound is a substance made up of two or more elements that are chemically combined.
This how the compound of salt is made: • Na gives 1 Electron to Cl.
Location on the Periodic Table… • An elements location on the periodic table will tell you how many valence electrons it has or how many empty spaces it has in its outer shell. • The group # equals the # of valence electrons.
