  2. Today’s class • Take notes- “Why do people wear clothes” • Create lists of protective clothes • Design protective clothes on mannequin handout

  3. Why do people wear clothes? • We have all seen the pictures of prehistoric people wearing animal skins on their bodies and tiger’s teeth necklaces • Have you ever wondered why they dressed as they did? • Have you ever wondered why YOU dress the way you do?

  4. Why do people wear clothes?

Why people wear clothes… • Throughout history, people have worn clothes for a variety of reasons. • The main reasons are: • Protection (weather & work) • Modesty (proper dress in community) • Identification (identify people in community) • Decoration (cultures decorate their bodies in different ways)

  6. PROtection • The weather is an important reason why people do or do not wear clothes. • WINTER: people may wear wool, down filled, or fur coats to survive the snow, ice and cold. Wearing heavy clothes keeps body heat near the body • usually means more layers

  7. SUMMER: • In the summer, when the weather is warm, people tend to wear fewer clothes, so that body heat can escape. • Usually means less layers

  8. Protection While Working… • People also wear certain clothes for protection when working • You can reduce of eliminate exposure and dangers to certain elements by using good equipment and wearing protective clothing. • Examples: • Firefighters • Construction workers • X-ray technicians • Hockey/football players

Todays class work Portfolio Requirement #3 • Under your notes, create a list of clothes you would wear… • In the winter • In the summer • List professions that you would need to wear protective clothing. 2. Portfolio Requirement #4. • Using the blank mannequin handout, create a “protective” outfit for summer, winter, and for a job that requires protective clothing. • MUST HAVE COLOUR and show EFFORT • Be sure to write “PROTECTIVE CLOTHING” at bottom of handout
