MBTI - What is it? • Developed to classify people’s observable behavior • Method of cataloging people - handy device to help us remember identifying characteristics and store that information for future reference • Measure of personality preferences; not skills or abilities or sociability • Enables people to identify their own preferences and compare how they are similar to and different from those closest to them • All preferences are equally important

Extraverts • “Look” with mouth instead of eyes • Verbally find way back when train of thought is lost • Need verbal affirmation • Too much affirmation is a contradiction in terms • Listening is “waiting to talk” • If you don’t know what they’re thinking, you haven’t listened • Talk first; think second • “I know the answer. I’ll just start talking until it becomes clear.” • Introverts • Believe that “talk is cheap” • Get suspicious if people are too complimentary • Irritated if someone says something that’s already been said • Too much affirmation makes them wonder why so much is needed • If you don’t know what they’re thinking, you haven’t asked • Think first; talk second • “I know the answer, I just need to get it in focus.”

Intuitiors • Give general answers to most questions; don’t understand why people can’t follow • Irritated when pushed for specifics • Time is relative; not late unless the meeting started without you • Believe that “boring details” is redundant • Prone to puns and word games • The bottom line • Say, “Here’s the overall plan -- we’ll take care of the details later.” • Sensors • Prefer specific answers to specific questions • “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” • “There’s no need to reinvent the wheel.” • Read magazines from front to back • “Seeing is believing.” • Just the facts • Frustrated with, “Here’s the overall plan -- we’ll take care of the details later.”

Thinkers • Settle disputes based on what is fair and truthful rather than what will make people happy • If you disagree with someone, you’d rather tell them than say nothing and let them think they are right • Explain emotions • Feelers • Likely to be the one in a meeting who asks, “How will this affect the people involved?” • Consider a “good decision” one that takes others’ feelings into account • Experience emotions

Judgers • Need to hear definite, concise statements • No tolerance for shades of meaning • “I know I’m right and because I know I’m right, you must be wrong.” • Thrive on order; have a “system” for keeping things in the closets, refrigerator, cabinets, etc. • Deadline is an estimate of how early to finish • Write the time management books • Provide necessary follow- through to any project • Must “moan” immediately if something interrupts their schedule • Perceivers • Don’t always say exactly what they mean • Share perceptions not judgments • Think they sound more definite than the actually do • Don’t plan a task but wait and see what it demands • Turn most work into play; if it can’t be made into fun, it probably isn’t worth doing • Deadline is an estimate of when to start • Get hit over the head by J’s wielding time management books • Provide alternatives, excitement, the playful part of life • No matter the subject, they generate new options
