  2. Awesome Animal! I have sharp claws, live in the Kalahari desert and might take off and run if I see a large bird. What am I? I’m a meerkat.

  3. Unknown Names • Meerkats are related to the mongoose. • Meerkat means mongoose in a certain language called Afrikaans. • The scientific name for meerkats is Suricata Suricatta. • Some people call meerkats Suricates.

  4. Look At Me! • Meerkats are brown or gray. • They also have four toes on each paw and each one is curved. • Meerkats have long black noses and a long tail with a black tip. • They have black rings around their eyes that act like sunglasses.

  5. Prey and Plants • A Meerkat’sprey are lizards, some insects, and bird eggs. • They also snack on roots, fruit, beetles, ants, termites, worms, spiders, centipedes, crickets, mice, grasshoppers, scorpions, and small snakes.

  6. Dry Desert • Most meerkats live in hot and dry deserts with dried plants and grass near their burrow. • Meerkats live in large areas ,so it’s easy to find food. • Meerkats live in gangs with 30 members. • They live in colonies. • Meerkats like to lie in the hot sun.
