A. Social Studies is the combined study of several social sciences

Each social scientist studies a specific area of human society • History- the study of past events • Geography- the study of the earth , its features, and the effects of human activity on the earth • Archaeology- The systematic recovery and study of material evidence (such as baskets, weapons, and tools) remaining from past cultures • Economics- The study of the production, distribution, and consumption of goods; study of how a person or country uses its resources to get what it wants and needs • Political Science- The study of government
C. Social Scientists use the scientific method as a technique for problem solving and decision making • Form a hypothesis (an educated guess about the relationship between 2 or more variables) • Collect Data (By doing research) • Examine the data collected and draw conclusions about what has been found • Report findings
D. Social Scientists analyze primary and secondary sources when conducting their research • Primary Sources- firsthand account of an event (the person who created the document actually experienced the event they have written about/ drawn/ or taken a picture of) - Examples of a primary source: photographs & journal entries • Secondary Source- second-hand account of an event (person who create the document did not experience the event they have written about) - Examples of a secondary source: textbooks & Encyclopedias
