As always, today we will be discussing some VERY mature topics. There will be some more graphic language. I need you all to be thoughtful and mature. These are serious issues in our culture. • Today: • Grades update • Adolescent Health Statistics • Impact of pornography • Sexual culture and the impact on young people’s mindsets and activities. • What can we do to fix this? Good Afternoon Friends

Office of Adolescent Health stats. • Of adolescents who have had sex: • 1/3rd has had only one partner. • 16 percent has had two partners • 32 percent has had three to five partners • 20 percent has had six or more partners. • Many adolescents are engaging in sexual behaviors other than vaginal intercourse: nearly one-half have had oral sex, and just over one in 10 have had anal sex. • Many people attribute this to the rapid expansion of the availability of pornography. • "Pornography has been linked to unrealistic attitudes about sex, beliefs that women are sex objects, more frequent thoughts about sex, and children and young people who view pornography tend to hold less progressive gender role attitudes.“ - Neil Malamuth UCLA Psychologist
Lets go back to those partner characteristics… Impact of ‘Purity Culture’ and slut shaming on women. • 30% of women report being unable to have an orgasm. • This is almost definitely mental not physical. • 1 in 4 college women are the victim of a sexual assault– 90% knowing their rapist – Date Rape. Impact of hyper-sexualized/masculine culture on men. • Less progressive gender views of both men and women • Younger and younger men seeking help with ED and using pharmaceuticals to enhance or improve their sexual performance. • 60% of male college students “indicated some likelihood of raping or using force in certain circumstances.”

Understanding sexual violence and ‘rape culture’ in our society. In your table groups finish up your posters and begin looking over the research paper on attitudes regarding women’s clothes and sexual violence. Be thinking about – what does this say about our society and how we view responsibility, women, men, and sex? What other questions could we ask to help us better understand this problem?
Sexual Violence Project: Two Options For the rest of the week you will be doing one of two project options. • Designing a survey project to look at the attitudes of Los Altos High School students in regards to sex, dating, violence and rape. It can be similar to the example survey project, but you may not replicated the exact study. • Design a 30 minute lesson for high school freshman aimed at changing the attitudes and activities that have lead to sexual violence being such a huge problem in our society. This project is to be done in partners or in a group. You may select your own groups for this project. Groups may not have more than four people in them.
