  3. Kathryn Gustafson • Kathryn Gustafson is an artist and landscape architect. She established her landscape architect practice in Paris 1980, initially working on her own and in conjunction with architects, artists and engineers. Kathryn Gustafson has almost 20 years of management experience in the field of landscape www.gustafson-porter.com

  4. Neil Porter • Neil Porter is an architect, born in England. He has 15 years experience in managing building and landscape projects. He has concurrently worked for a number of leading designers and architects such as Bernard Tshumi, Ian Ritchie, Will Aslop. www.gustafson-porter.com

  5. The story begins... • Kathryn Gustafson and Neil Porter first crossed paths on the project ‘Parc de la Villette’ in Paris. In 1997 they set up Gustafson Porter Ltd collaborating on the design of all the projects produced by the practise. www.gustafson-porter.com

  6. Gustafson porter is an international landscape design practise based in London, which operates over a wide range of disciplines within landscape, architecture, engineering and design. www.gustafson-porter.com

  7. The work of the practise expresses the tension and balance in the built and natural environment which is striking and contemporary. Gustafson porter is motivated by the difficulty of the human conditions and the desire for stability, as well as change in the modern world. Evaluation • Most of the park seems inspiring and entertaining, however, it's all so different and disconnected, that it can feel more overwhelming than inspiring from all the different styles • According to the park's creators which are Tschumi, Porter and Gustafson, this is all intentional, and theoretically justified

  18. Conclusion • The design questions the conventional conception of a park as green open space. While there is plenty of grass here, the ‘natural’ park is clearly designed to express the fact that it is artificial and domesticated

Current Project • Woolwich Square is a £6.6m project to revamp the two squares in the centre of Woolwich town centre is going ahead after Greenwich councilors accepted the proposals. • The scheme follows detailed consultation with local residents and businesses, as well as targeted consultations to enable young people to give their views.

  23. Swiss Cottage • In the centre of a cluster of buildings of local importance including the public library, a leisure centre, the Hampstead Theatre, a community centre, the Winchester Project, offices, affordable housing, luxury housing and a retirement home.

Description • This open space expressively intertwines the developing cultural and recreational needs of this diverse neighborhood and it is one of four interlinked landscape projects by Gustafson Porter on this site • The new park transforms a collection of loosely related functions into a coherent communal setting with an elevated sense of place.

  25. Features • At the park’s centre is a water feature intended for play as well as visual drama. • The park also provides a shallow pool, which can be drained. The garden can be used to host special events in collaboration with the Hampstead Theatre and Central School of Speech and Drama.

  26. Planting • The plant palette features herbaceous perennials framed by clipped structural hedges. • The plantings are based on collective memory - types that people recall from childhood, encouraging acceptance of this space as a new home.
