PROJECT OF IIT BOMBAY’S CDEEP ONVIRTUAL LABORATORIES FOR VLSI & EMBEDDED SYSTEMS 2009-2010School of Engineering and TechnologyNagaland UniversityProf.K.Kannan,ViceChancellor,Nagaaland University.AyanglaJamir,Asst.Prof. Dept of ECE,SET,NU.
School of Engineering and Technology –First Engineering College in the State of Nagaland It was inaugurated on 29th October 2007 by the Governor of the State. The School of Engineering and Technology is a part of the Kohima campus and is temporarily situated at D.C Court Junction Dimapur. School of Engineering and Technology Nagaland University
Contd… • The School is housed in a single four storied building and a carpet area of 35500 ft. • The Campus is well connected by train, air services as well as road transportation. • The campus is networked with all the other campuses of Nagaland University.
Contd… The School offers the following B.Tech programs:- -Biotechnology -Computer Science -Information Technology -Electronics and Communication -Agricultural Engineering and Technology
Collaborative Institutes • IIITM-KERALA • IIT-MADRAS • IIT-KANPUR • IIT-BOMBAY • IIT-GUWAHATI
Nagaland University and NPTEL • First School under NPTEL • Nagaland University has established an MOU with IIITM-Kerala to facilitate quality education. • Implemented under the able guidance of Dr.K.R.Srivathsan,Pro Vice Chancellor of IGNOU. • 3200 hrs- Recorded Video Lectures.
IT INFRASTRUCTURE The I.T infrastructure and computing environment at School of Engineering & Technology, Nagaland University is as detailed below:- • HP Blade Server for storage of NPTEL (National programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) recorded video lectures (RVLs). • Wireless Networking equipments includes Nortel VPN Router, Wireless Access points, Firewall and Gateways. • 24x7 Dedicated Broadband Internet connection of 2Mbps bandwidth from Railtel Corporation of India Ltd. . • Wi-fi enabled Academic complex and Residential Campus.
IT INFRASTRUCTURE • Virtual classroom facility (VPN connectivity) linked to IIITM, Kerala through Railways Optical Fibre Network for Real Time Synchronous Learning. “Learning Management System “, an application implemented using moodle software and “course wiki” which assists the faculties in designing courses and setting online tests ,quizzes ,etc. It also helps in tracking and evaluation of assignments, test and quizzes submitted by the students through the application • IBM Tower Servers (Domain Controller Server, Application Server and Wireless Management System). • APC UPS (40KVA) and 125 KVA generator for Power Backup • Desktop Lenovo Thinkcentre PCs (126 Nos.) installed in 3 Computer Labs, Departments, library and offices.
Silicon Design Industry (VLSI) in IndiaA Overview • Silicon Design shops increasing across the Globe and specifically in India. • 125 companies operating as of today in India & this number is just growing. • India currently only constitute about 0.5% of the Silicon Design business. • As per Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India; last year India produced 10,000 Silicon Design professionals against an openings of 50,000. This gap will only grow as more jobs move to India from developed economies.
Necessity of this Project…. • Since the School of Engineering and Technology is at its infancy, implementing such projects would benefit the students immensely. • It will provide an opportunity to provide livelihood .(At present the 70% of the population is youth) • Poor rail, air and road connectivity within Nagaland as a whole. • Practical Orientation is required. • Virtual Lab-Cost Effective.
How to tap this opportunity. • Need to invest in producing quality manpower at our University. • “Train the trainer”. The faculty has to be trained in the field of VLSI. • Create Silicon Design Lab with real time Industry tools. • Bridge the gap between the Industry & Academia; have a collaborative mode between the two. • Nagaland being cutoff from the mainland; needs to get engaged with institutes like IIT Bombay to make education more in sync with the domestic & global job market.
What is needed? • Continuous Industry-Academia interaction. • A partnership that fosters research mindset. • Support indigenous technology so that a right ecosystem is available in the valley and thus in the country. • In Nagaland it is all the more important that students get engaged in latest technology to express themselves creatively and not become part of the mindless violence that is all around us today.
VIRTUAL LABORATORIES FOR VLSI &EMBEDDED SYSTEMS The virtual laboratory would consist of three components: 1. Basic infrastructure at each remote centre. 2. Content delivery for teacher training at each remote centre (through the CDEEP facility at IIT Bombay). 3. Content delivery for student training at each remote centre
Basic Infrastructure • IMAGE VLSI and Embedded Lab 50 • NGSPICE,NGNUTMEG • GHDL, Xilinx • Computing Infrastructure • Five Servers and forty five high end PC’s • Streaming Video Interface to the internet or EDUSAT(for delivery of CDEEP courses) • Web Interface to the Software tools with adequate network connectivity.
Content Delivery for Teacher Training • Train teachers at remote centres. • CDEEP will deliver course content in the area to remote centres. • Training on CAD tools, assistance in course homework, assignments and coordination between remote and course instructors at IIT Bombay.
Content Delivery for Students • A series of online laboratory courses in Hardware Description Language, Simulation and Synthesis • To support the online courses ,regular online visits will be conducted simultaneously
CDEEP of IIT Bombay The following courses which are being run at IIT Bombay will be supported using the virtual laboratory. 1. VLSI System Design 2. VLSI Circuit Design. 3. Hardware Description Languages. 4. Embedded Systems. 5. Computer Systems 6. VLSI Design Lab 7. Modern Electronics Design Techniques 8. Digital Circuit Lab 9. Foundation of VLSI 10. Hardware Description Language 11.Basic Electronics More meaningful & much needed courses are being added to this list
