Exercise: can you draw a map of JPN? • Based on the actual map, find your partner(s). • In English, introduce yourself to each other. (1 min) • Introduce your partner to classmates. (30 sec for each person)

Syllabus • Requirement: participation in language activities in class, H.W.(vocabulary study), and taking quiz. • Expectation: academic achievement of the following standards (slide #6)
NGSS Standards for world language • Demonstrate understanding of basic words and everyday expressions dealing with simple and concrete daily activities and needs presented in a clear, slow, and repeated speech. (Listening) • Read and write 1) Japanese scripts: hiragana, katakana, and 58 kanji (Reading & Writing) • Recognize written familiar words, phrases and simple sentences supported by (or not by) visuals. (Reading) • Respond to/Initiate orally simple questions, directions, and classroom commands without English reference. (Speaking) • Say and write simple declarative and interrogative sentences in the present and past tense grammatically, regarding personal and everyday information (Total) • Comprehend basic aspects of Japanese culture: greeting, bowing, currency, food, school, leisure (Culture)

Classroom rules • No gadgets are allowed (manner mode please) • Take your risks to make mistakes • Mutual Respect
Be Japanese persona • Call your classmate by Last name + san(suffix). • Call your instructor by his first name + sensei, or just “sensei.”
Survey • Pls take the survey (5 min). • When you turn it in, find the katakana charts. By using them, try to write your full name in katakana on the name tag.

Little surprise • For assessment as the whole group, we use mini white-board. You need to write down your answer as quickly as possible, say, in 30 sec. (Let’s try on the next 4 slides)
