LPHS GENERAL INFORMATION • TRIMESTER SCHEDULE 3 TWELVE WEEK TERMS (TRIMESTERS) 5 CLASSES PER DAY REPORT CARD EVERY 6 WEEKS
HOW MANY CHOICES ARE THERE? • 8TH grade students have to decide on 15 course selections for their freshman year • These selections can come from 38 different courses offered to 9th grade students
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS • The State of Indiana has four diploma types • A general diploma remains • The CORE 40 diploma becomes the default diploma for La Porte High School Students • A Core 40 with Academic Honors diploma is available • A Core 40 with Technical Honors diploma is also available
The Core 40 Diploma • 48 credits are required for graduation from LPHS and must come from the following areas: • Language Arts 8 credits • Social Studies 6 credits • Mathematics 6 credits • Science 6 credits • Health and Wellness 1 credit • Personal Finance 1 credit • Physical Education 2 credits • Directed Electives 5 credits • General Electives 13 credits
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS REQUIREMENTS • 8 credits from a combination of literature, composition, and speech • Students must pass a speech course, either Speech A or B (students who are interested may take both)
Social Studies Requirements • 2 credits in United States History • 1 credit in United States Government • 1 credit in Economics • 2 credits from World History/Civilization or Geography/History of the World • 2 credits in World History/Civilization OR • 2 credits in Geography/History of the World
Mathematics Requirements • Algebra I, Geometry, & Algebra II • Students are required to earn six (6) credits in Math in Grades 9-12 • Students will be required to be enrolled in a Math or Quantitative Reasoning course each year they are in High School
Science Requirements • 2 credits in Biology • 2 credits in Chemistry, Physics, or Integrated Chemistry-Physics • 2 additional credits in Core 40 science courses
Personal Financial Responsibility Fulfilled through Personal Financial Responsibility course in Business Department or Preparing for College and Careers course in Family and Consumer Science Department One trimester only
Directed Elective Requirements • The 5 credits must come from: • World Languages • Fine Arts • Career-technical
Core 40 with Academic Honors Additional Requirements • Earn 2 additional Core 40 math credits • Earn 6-8 Core 40 world language credits, and • Earn 2 Core 40 fine arts credits, and • Earn a grade of “C” or above in courses that will count toward the diploma, and • Have a grade point average of “B” or above, and • Complete one of the following: • Two Advanced Placement courses and corresponding AP exams • Academic, transferable dual high school/college courses resulting in 6 college credits • One Advanced Placement course and corresponding AP exam and academic transferable dual high school/college course(s) resulting in 3 college credits • Score 1750 or higher SAT. (Minimum of 530 on each section) • Score a 26 composite ACT score (Must complete the written portion)
Core 40 with Technical Honors Additional Requirements • Earn a grade of “C” or above in courses that will count toward the diploma, and • Have a grade point average of “B” or above, and • Complete six (6) credits in a college and career pathway, and • Must meet requirements in 2 of the following: • 2 Dual Credit(on Priority List) or AP Courses • WorkKeys Test • Professional Career Internship course • Industry-based work experience in 2-year Tech Ed Prog • Earn a state-approved, industry-recognized certification
So, What Are My Course Choices? • All freshmen (9th graders) must take: • 2 trimesters of English (Lit 9 & Comp 9) Students may opt to take Speech B their Junior or Senior year for Dual Credit • 2-3 trimesters of Math ( Algebra I – 1, 2, 3 or Accelerated Geometry 1,2) • 2 trimesters of either Biology or Earth Science
Other Course Selections • English ---- Speech A or B, Debate, or Adv. Speech, Journalism • Social Studies --- Geography and History of the World A, B or World Civilization A, B, C • World Languages --- French 1, German 1, Spanish 1 • Art --- 2-D Art, 3-D Art, or Art History • Music --- Concert Band 1, 2, 3; Concert Orchestra 1, 2, 3; or, Beginning Chorus A, B, C • Family/Consumer Sciences --- Preparing for Life and Careers [encouraged]; Nutrition 1, 2; Clothing 1, 2; or Interpersonal Relations
Choices Continued • Business/Technology --- Business Fundamentals, Digital Communications or Personal Financial Responsibility [encouraged] • Industrial Technology --- Introduction to Engineering Design; Principles of Engineering; Graphic Communications A, B; Aeronautics; Transportation • Physical Education --- Basic Physical Education A, B • Health and Wellness --- Health
