The Service Track Concept Service Track is an interactive technology designed to alert the user when proactive maintenance is required in some area of his or her life.
The Service Track Concept Some examples: Scheduling a doctor’s appointment Getting an oil change Replacing home HEPA filters
Problems of Practice A lack of proactive maintenance can cause a variety of problems.
Problems of Practice Possible Reasons Why People Fail to Maintain: Lack of Knowledge – People may not know how to perform routine maintenance. Intimidation – People may not feel qualified to properly perform maintenance themselves. Forgetfulness – A person may simply forget to perform scheduled maintenance. Error – A person may attempt maintenance, but might do so incorrectly.
How Service Track Might Help For example: One core area that service track helps proactively maintain is a person’s vehicle. Service track reminds you what type of service you need, when you need it, and what the service will do. The Service-Track concept developed out of a recognized need for a device that could help drivers proactively maintain their lives.
How Service Track Might Help But all the reminding in the world might not help if people really just don’t want to service their vehicles, or find reminders annoying… DO PEOPLE REALLY WANT THE SERVICE TRACK CONCEPT, AND DO THEY REALLY THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA?

Designing Service Track Four core design criteria that were considered: Invisibility (see Dourish, 2001) Tangibility (see Price et al., 2003) Ubiquity (see Winograd, 1997) Embodiment (see Dourish, 2001)
