The Voice • Throughout history, singing has been the most widespread and familiar way to make and share music. • Ancient Greek drama included a chorus. • Singers have always had a magnetic appeal. Today many singers become the most popular people of their respective cultures
The Voice • There is something magical in the connection between singer and audience. • The voice is the only instrument that can fuse a word with musical tone. Thus poetry and singing have been forever linked.
How it works. • Air from the lungs passes the vocal cords causing them to vibrate and make sound. • The pitch of the sound is determined by the tension of the cords. Vocal Range • A well trained classical singer will command a pitch range that spans a little more than 2 octaves • Most amateur or untrained voices command 1.5 or less.
Vocal Classifications • Soprano • Alto • Tenor • Bass In most cases the female voice is higher than the male due to the size of the vocal cords The four basic vocal ranges are; This will be further broken down on the next slide
