MATERIAL HANDLING • Material Handling is the movement, storage, control and protection of materials, goods and products • Material handling equipment is used to increase throughput, control costs, and maximize productivity. • Everything we eat or wear, and we use has, at some stage, been stored and handled by materials handling equipment.
FORKLIFT TRUCKS • FORKLIFT TRUCK- A MHE or a Powered industrial truck used to lift and transport materials. • They are a prime partof any industry. • They are differentfrom other MHEs. • They have rear wheel steering.
HISTORY • First used in 1800’s as SACKTRUCKS. • Powered truckcame into being in the early20th century. • These trucks becamepopular due to the shortage of labour in WW-I. • Clark first gave the counter balanced truck in 1917, Yaleproduced the first electric truck in 1925. • Post WW-II, Warehouses needed more maneuverable forklift trucks with higherdemands. • Soon many types of trucks came into existence to meet these demands.

WORKING • Working can be understood through the four main systems of a forklift truck • Transmission System • Steering System • Hydraulic System • Electrical System
FORKLIFT PRINCIPLES THE LEVER • Lever: It is one of the simplest mechanical devices. However, a lever by itself is not effective. It must have something on to pivot. This pivot is called a fulcrum. • Law of Equilibrium: The effort multipliedby its distance from the fulcrum equals the load multiplied by its distance from the fulcrum. This law of equilibrium is true for all classes of levers.
CENTRE OF GRAVITY • Itis the point on an object at which all of the objects weight is concentrated. For symmetrical loads, the center of gravity is at the middle of the load.
FORKLIFT STABILITY • A forklift truck’s ability to stay upright while it is in motionis its stability. • It is the most important aspect to avoid accidents. • The lateral stability of a truck changes depending on how high the load is lifted to. • The rated lift capacity is reduced at increased lifting height.
STABILITY TRIANGLE • Almost all counterbalancedpowered industrial trucks have a three-pointsuspensionsystem. • The triangle formed between points A, B, and C is called the Stability Triangle. • The truck will not tip over as long as the center of gravity(C.G.) remains inside the triangle.
FORKLIFT TRUCK SPECIFICATION • Lift capacity • Stroke • Fuel choices • Tyres • Loads at a specified maximum speed
APPLICATIONS Block Stacking Loading and Unloading
Loading Dock Rack Storage Truck Loading

ADVANTAGES • VERSATILE • EMISSIONS • FUEL • LIFESPAN • NOISE
DISADVANTAGES • INDOOR USE LIMITATIONS • ACCIDENTS ARE FATAL IN NATURE • INTENSIVE TRAINING FOR OPERATION • SPEED LIMITATION

FUTURE PROSPECT • Logisticsis growing very fast in India • The new age hybridenginedriven forklift trucks have been already designed and developedin some parts of the world. • Bright careers prospects in this field in INDIA.
CONCLUSION • Forklift trucksplay a major role in the industries. • FORKLIFT TRUCKS aid the industries to attain high productivity and achieve cost optimization. • India has a bright future in material handling. • The knowledge about Forklift trucks is necessary. • Thus my intention has been to provide you with the overview of the fundamentals of FORKLIFT TRUCKS
