American National Standards Institute (ANSI) To enhance the global competitiveness of U.S. business and the American quality of life by promoting and facilitating voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessment systems and ensuring their integrity. A Private- and Public-Sector Partnership Since 1918 ANSI is not a government agency or a standards developer.

ANSI Homeland Security Standards Panel (HSSP) Formed in February 2003, the ANSI-HSSP (www.ansi.org/hssp) mission is to identify and facilitate the development and enhancement of homeland security standards Serve as private/public sector partnership for cross-sector issues Support the work of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate’s Office of Standards Convene Workshop initiatives and publish reports that address specific homeland security areas to identify existing standards and conformity assessment programs, gap areas, and make recommendations for addressing these gaps

Selected Workshop Accomplishments • Biometrics • Biological and Chemical Threat Agents • Training Programs for First Response to Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Events • Enterprise Power Security • Emergency Communications • Perimeter Security • Private Sector Emergency Preparedness and Business Continuity (with the 9/11 Commission) • Lessons Learned from Hurricane Katrina

Selected Accomplishments (continued) • Position the U.S. with a lead role internationally • ISO/IEC/ITU-T Strategic Advisory Group on Security • International Workshop Agreement (IWA) meeting on Emergency Preparedness held April 24-26, 2006 in Italy • Monitoring the work of ISO/TC 223 (Societal Security) • Created a Homeland Security Standards Database to capture key standards and serve as a resource for the HS community • www.hssd.us
