Ferdinand Magellan By Leila Hilf
A little about Magellan • Inclusive years of exploration- 3. • Where and when was he born-1480-1521 Portugal. • Country that funded the exploration- Spain. • Who sent the explorer- King Charles V of Spain. • He is the first European to sail the pacific ocean. • Only 18 out of 270 people returned to Spain. • Enrique- his interpreter finished the journey after he died.
The exploration He visited the Philippines and was the first European to voyage the pacific ocean. He visited the spice islands too because he wanted to bring back spices. • The Philippines obviously lived in the Philippines before Magellan came but soon after They had an argument with the local tribes they had a war. During the war though Magellan was killed when a spear entered through his chest. 40 others of Magellan crew where killed as well. • During the voyage they all had almost starved to death and had no fresh food. Also During the exploration the weather was bad and really cold. Magellan though that the voyage would only take a few days but it took months. Some of the sailors decided mutiny and tried to steal three of the ships but Magellan however fought back and executed them.
Reflections and conclusions • What I learned about Magellan was very important to history. I learned that you can do what ever you want as long as you put your mind to it. When Magellan died his interpreter finished the journey but Magellan still got most of the credit. I also learned that if you are smart and you really believe in yourself you can do it. Magellan has had some things named in his honor including the magellanic penguin, the Magellan probe an unmanned ship to Venus, a woodpecker, a band (named Magellan), a cloud, Magellan aerospace ( a Canadian aerospace manufacture and • Magallanes, old name for the city of Punta Arenas in Chile.
