  2. Basic Information • Ferdinand Magellan was born on 1480 in Sabrosa, Portugal. • He died on April 27, 1521 in Mactan, Philippines. • His parents are Rodrigo de Magalhaes & Alda de Mesquita. • He is known for captaining the first circumnavigation expedition. • He came from a noble family.

  3. Early life • As a young man, Magellan worked in the Portugal navy. • He fought in India and the East Indies. • Moluccas, an island group in the East Indies, had valuable spices. • Europeans called the islands The Spice Islands for their good spices.

  4. Voyage Plan • In 1512 he went to King Emmanuel. • He asked to pay for his journey to look for a west shortcut for the Spice Islands. • Emmanuel would not pay for his journey. • Magellan was furious so he went King Charles I of Spain. • Magellan asked King Charles to pay for his journey. • King Charles said he would pay for his journey.

  5. Voyage • On September 20, 1519 Magellan with 237 crew members on 5 ships started sailing. • He went to the Atlantic Ocean and down the shore of South America. • Magellan found a way to the ocean that Balboa first found. • Magellan called the ocean the Pacific. • The strait at the southern shore of S. America is now called the Strait of Magellan.

  6. Destination • Magellan had only 3 ships left while they crossed the Pacific. • It was 100 days later that they reached the Philippine Islands. • On the day April 27, 1521 Magellan was killed in an argument on the Philippine Islands.
