Snapshots Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. Of Meekness
Psalm 122:1 I was glad when they said to me,“Let us go into the house of the Lord.”
Colossians 3:23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
Our Society today is… Selfish • Self absorbed • Self centered • Self assertive • Self pity • Self serving • Self indulgence • Self proclaimed • Self praise • Self esteem • Self righteous • Self deception • Self image • Self interest • Self preservation
What meekness is not… • Being “self”-ish • A meek person is the opposite of one who rants and raves about his rights and moves to get his rights regardless of his influence, spirit, or methods. • A meek person is the opposite of one who uses force or harsh, rash means.
What Meekness Is Not… • Meekness is not an indifference to sin. Hebrews 1:8 But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”
What Meekness Is Not… • Meekness does not suggest a compromise of truth, or a failure to teach on touchy subjects, or a failure to reprove. 2 Timothy 4:1 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
Moses was meek… • but he was intolerant of sin Numbers 12:3 (Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth.) Exodus 32:19 So it was, as soon as he came near the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing. So Moses’ anger became hot, and he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain.
The meek person still hates sin Romans 12:9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Galatians 1:8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. Psalm 119:104 Through Your precepts I get understanding;Therefore I hate every false way.
What Meekness Is Not… • Meekness is not weakness. • Jesus was meek… • But He could have called 72,000 angels. Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matthew 26:53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?
What Meekness Is… • Meekness is controlled strength. It is a character held by a strong moral resolve at a time when one may have the power, and the inclination, to behave otherwise. • Gentleness could be called “the acting out of meekness.” Meekness is the feeling that we have toward all men; gentleness is the acting out of that feeling. • Meekness is an attitude toward God and others which is the product of choice.
Meekness Demonstrated By Jesus • Jesus had an incredible love for His Father… • And He had an incredible love for all mankind. John 14:31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here. Ephesians 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.
Meekness Toward God. • Necessary in receiving God's word James 1:19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
Meekness Toward God. • Admit that we are sinners and need Him. 1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
Meekness Toward God. • Walk worthy; keep the unity of the Spirit Ephesians 4:1 (KJV) I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, 3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Meekness Toward Mankind. • Forbear one another in love Colossians 3:12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. Ephesians 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
Meekness Toward Mankind. • We should show gentleness toward all. • We should be always ready to talk to others about the hope that we have. Titus 3:2 (KJV) To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. 1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;
Meekness Toward Mankind. • Kindly teaching the lost. Let them know that you care about them. • It’s not about you being right! There is no need to promote yourself to teach the Gospel. 2 Timothy 2:24 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,
Meekness Toward Mankind. • Restore the fallen in the same manner. Galatians 6:1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. 5 For each one shall bear his own load.
Meekness Toward Mankind. • And when others are hateful toward you… • A meek person seeks to accomplish his purposes in a quiet, gentle manner. A meek person acts like a lady or a gentleman, when well-treated or evil-treated. Romans 12:17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Luke 6:27 “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.
We are no better than anyone else • We should not look down on anyone. Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
2 postures, 2 prayers, 2 attitudes – Luke 18 • The prayer of the Pharisee. 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’
2 postures, 2 prayers, 2 attitudes – Luke 18 • The prayer of the tax collector. 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Humble like Christ • His meekness is demonstrated in His attitude toward the privileges of His station Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
Meekness should govern our every relationship • Some people want to please self first and everybody else comes somewhere down the line. • Other people will do first what other people want of them. • The rule followed by the truly meek and humble person is: God first, others second, self last. • Does your life live up to God's standard of meekness and humility? Do you put the needs of others before yourself? Are you submitting to God and correcting the sins in your life?
