Lifestyle snapshots A mutation of personas
Disclaimer: I apologize in advance for the many bad science-fiction references.
General idea User groups : Personas :: User tasks : Lifestyle snapshots
Try to please everyone, end up pleasing no one Easy to indulge personal biases Hard to conceptualize Hard to refer to data (“Purple bristles won’t sell according to survey E2 of sample group A4f6.”) Design to please somebody (who’s not your boss or yourself) Filter out personal bias Concrete examples let you visualize the user’s world Easy to refer to – (“See, Harry wouldn’t want a broom like that.”) After Personas Before Personas
Try to hit every circumstance, end up not fitting any situation Easy to indulge personal biases Hard to conceptualize Hard to refer to data (“The stillsuit might get in the way of the Fremen talking.”) Design to fix one specific situation Filter out personal bias Concrete examples let you visualize the user’s actions Easy to refer to – (“Muad’Dib wanted to whisper to Stilgar, but couldn’t through the mask.”) After Snapshots Before Snapshots
Lifestyle snapshots “The principle is that you should not try to design for every possible situation… instead design it well for at least one situation when it WILL be used.”
Example “Causing a communications disruption” Vs HELMET: Jammed? Raspberry. There's only one man who would dare give me the raspberry. Lone Starr!”
Stretching personas too thin • Well, my user is a 19-year-old male with strong Force capabilities and a deep vendetta against slavery. • …and a senator. • …but simultaneously supports the Rebellion. • …and owns a TIE fighter. • …and an X-wing. • …and a bantha. • …and a sophisticated protocol droid. • …but is simultaneously technophobic and computer-literate. • …and… NOTE: “Stretches self too thin” is a completely valid persona quality. Salad-bar-syndrome people do exist.
Stretching snapshots too thin • Frank Lin goes to microwave some popcorn. • But it has to be set at a special “popcorn” level for this particular brand. • And he also uses the microwave to check the time. • And his homework assignments. • And his stock portfolio. • While he’s at it, he also uses the microwave as a graphing calculator to do his math homework.
