Tangent LecturePlot Literally the MOST IMORTANT THING FOR STORY TELLERS
What is plot? • Plot is “The Plan, Scheme, or Main story of a literary or dramatic work, as a play, novel, or short story.” • Plot is basically the “storyline” it can sometimes be the most, or least, important element to a story. • It says “This is what happens in my story!” • Examples of Plot: • The Hero’s Journey is an excelent example! • Characters should be the ones to make the plot, not the other way around.
Types of Plot • The plot has to make sense! • You can’t have a plot that makes no sense at all, plot should move in a way that keeps instances of excitement • The “Episodic Plot” should be avoided, where the W sort of plot becomes boring. The Grand Plan A to C is where the story should begin, the decline represents the doubts, or the main problem in the beginning of the story, C to E Represents most of the story. E is normally the point at where the climax of the story is seen, the story could end right there, but when F falls into place, tragedy strikes and the dreams that the character sees are crushed. At F the climb is over, nice try character, like we’d let you acomplish your dreams (HAHAHA) From F to G the character fights back, and G is the point at where the character accomplisheses his goal on his own story.
Where is Plot NOT Important • While you do need it in novels and stories, things needing a storyline, you don’t always need plot. • Plot isn’t important in little bits and pieces of writing • Little blurbs • Things that don’t have a storyline If it’s not a story, you don’t need a plot. (Without a plot it’s not a story)
How to Use Plot vs How NOT to use plot • A plot shouldn’t be a train wreck • Avoid plot holes • Don’t keep constant tension, add a slow dance once and awhile, characters need to catch their breath. • A plot should keep things interesting • Plots should be structured, but not predictable. • Sure, we know in the Avengers that The Aliens are going to be the biggest issue, okay, they’re done we can go home no- THE BOMB • Plot twist is a change from an expected direction, or the spice of a plot! • The plot is the only means to an end.
Subplot • The subplot is simple, basically another storyline going on inside of the main story line. • They should never overtake the main plot. • When you’re aware they’re there, but don’t pay attention to them, that’s a good trick! • The romance of Nick and Jordan in the Great Gatsby, it’s not the main storyline, but it’s an interesting little story within the story.
Tangent Challenge • Tangent Challenge: I want you to plot out a story, make the plotline with • Beginning • Decline • Incline • Decline • Climax • 3-1,000 words pleeease.
