  1. PSAs on Film Liners CAFA Convention Marriott Hotel & Golf Resort Saturday, February 11, 2007

  2. Types of Film Liners PET (Polyester) • Highest temperature resistance • Strong, stretch resistant • Kiss & die cut-able PE (Polyethylene) • Lower heat resistance • Softer & “hand” stretchable • Low & high density available PP (Polypropylene) • Higher temperature resistance than PE • Soft - hand stretchable • Die cuttable

  3. Paper Liners Described by basis weight Adequate caliper control Adequate cross web profile Moisture sensitive Tears easily Opaque Generally lower cost Film liners Described by caliper Excellent caliper control Excellent cross web profile Moisture resistant Good tear strength Clear Generally higher priced. Paper Liners vs. Film Liners

  4. TypicalSilicone-Coated Release Liners • 55 lb. Densified Kraft (SCK) • 60 lb. Poly-coated • 74 lb. Poly-coated • 80 lb. Densified Kraft (SCK) • 12 pt. Board (poly-coated) • 1.5-mil Polyester Film • 2.0-mil Polyester Film • 4.0-mil Polyester Film • 5.0-mil Polyethylene & Polypropylene Film SCK = Super Calendered Kraft

  5. So…What’s a “Lb.”? Lb. refers to the basis weight of the paper expressed per ream where…. • 1 ream of paper = 333.3 Square Yards • 333.3 SY of a 55 lb. liner will weigh 55 lbs. • 12 pt. Board refers neither to basis weight nor to caliper. It’s a different measure. • 12 pt. Board in basis weight = 140 lb.

  6. What about Poly-coated? • The paper & the polyethylene coating are added together to get the total basis weight. • Example: A 74 lb. poly-coated liner could consist of a 50 lb. paper coated with 12 lbs. of polyethylene on each side.

  7. Advantages of Film Liners • Strength to reduce tear during removal • Dust free for clean room operations • High speed rotary die cutting • Reduced wear on rotary dies • Ease of automation (robotic assembly) • Moisture resistant • Clear visibility for substrate marking

  8. Industries Using Film Liners In addition to the abrasives industry, film liners can be found typically in the following: • Electronics • Automotive • Medical • Fenestration or Window Manufacturers

  9. Summary • Film liners can be used regardless of PSA construction. • Cost is relative to film caliper. • Adchem has expertise in engineering products on film liners.
