The First 15m in the First 5 years! Why Streamline kickout focus early? Why coaching consistency is essential. Components of a great kickout How to progress and stress our kickouts from beginners to age group swimmers.
Why Streamline Kickouts Early? • Easiest way to improve • Skills that are plausible for new swimmers • Biggest bang for your buck • Good foundation for proper turns and breakouts • Any age and any level can do a great job of them!
Coaching Consistency • Keeping swimmers for longer periods of time can result in Mastery as opposed to gains and losses. • Avoid the broken family syndrome of swimmers pitting coaches against each other in their demands • Long Term is Now... Don’t wait, don’t hope for them to want to later, don’t think a better time will come! • Fitness /Speed etc only mean something done with the mechanics you will be using at the competition. Don’t work on kickouts in workout they will not be there for meets!
Kickout Progression • Push off the wall • Body Dolphin • Fly kick • Streamline glide • Add pieces together (push off and streamline glide/push off and fly kick etc) • Distance for kickouts/number of kicks/speed of kicks... I like distance first, but all should be used • Kickouts under Pressure... Increase the expectations and don’t overlook those who are not keeping up
How to measure/test and monitor KO’s • Number of kicks random/requested and checked • Kickout distance or number of kicks in a set on top of a pace time/hit time requirement • Increase kickout expectations through a set or a swim • Speed of kickouts • Listen but verify! • Build from where you are to where you want to be... • Bad kickers still need a kickout!
