  2. Vision The College of Veterinary Medicine aspires to be recognized as a leader in veterinary and comparative biomedical education, scholarship, and public engagement in the University of Illinois system, in the state, in the nation, and around the world.

  3. To attain this vision the College will: 1. Cultivate an innovative and broad-based, lifelong educational experience in the art and science of veterinary medicine and comparative biomedical science. 2. Maintain high-quality, focused research programs and expand collaborative programmatic interactions. 3. Address the needs of a changing profession and a diverse society in innovative ways. 4. Include a global dimension in all activities by developing international programs and collaborations. 5. Improve and strengthen operational efficiency, facilities, and financial health. 6. Promote and foster an environment of collegiality and professionalism.

  4. Proposal for Facility Master Plan Develop a comprehensive master plan for the veterinary campus that will encourage interaction, provide people spaces to enhance community, and improve the visual image of the college.

  5. Create a link building with an Information Commons including, but not limited to: lecture classroom large auditorium teaching labs computer suite study rooms student space exercise facility cafeteria bookstore library administrative units other ?

  6. Provide for the functional and visual integration of multiple buildings • Allow for the remodel of small animal medicine and surgery space. • Study the best location for clinical pathology. • Incorporate the footprint of biowaste/biosafety facility. • Expand VDL space for a possible state lab merger. • Determine the best use of SOL. • Study the traffic flows and possible change of entrances.

  7. Plan for Vacated Space & Grounds • Plan for the conversion of vacated space into research use for labs and office space based upon college priorities. • Plan for the conversion of vacated space for instructional use considering a larger student body requiring bigger lecture rooms and teaching labs. • Create a master site plan including parking, landscaping and grounds, memorials/a perpetual garden, location of the medicinal toxic plant garden, and storage.

  8. The Bid Review Process • A bid document was created. • A feasibility committee was formed. • Campus Facilities and Services Architectural & Engineering Staff • College: H. Whiteley, K. Campbell, G. Meerdink, G. Winckler • 15 firms submitted bids and were evaluated on: • Makeup of project team • Experience with similar projects • Experience with veterinary / lab facilities • Experience with universities • Experience with UIUC • Quality of project samples • Organization size to undertake project • Proximity to campus • 4 firms were chosen for presentations.

  9. Four Finalists Made Presentations • CUH2A • Harley Ellis • Moorhead-Gruber/FLADD • RATIO/Severns All four firms had valuable design and planning experience, with two firms having significantly more experience with veterinary colleges.

  10. Firm Chosen – CUH2A • Gave the best overall presentation and presented the most creative options. • Had significant research/biomedical and veterinary facility/program expertise. • Has already worked with UIUC on major projects (IGB and BSL3 planning). • Has a well trained project team that appeared best able to lead the college through the planning process.

Should the College of Veterinary Medicine seek to assimilate into the UIUC or to differentiate itself?
