  5. Requirements • Field Notebook • Identification of 6 plants with use of a dichotomous key • Extra Credit Voucher Collection

  6. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Dichotomous Keys • Dichotomous means "divided in two parts". • Each step has two choices; what you choose leads you to another question until the item is identified. • Based on physical characteristics.

  12. 1 2 3 4 5 6 GROUP TASK • Each group gets ONE paper bag • Make a Dichotomous key for ALL the items in the bag. • Follow the Procedures.

PROCEDURES • First make and answer key. • Write the names of your partners and bag # on your ANSWER key. • Assign a number to each object and make up a new name “scientific name” for each object. • Example: #1--------Mollusca minuta (small shell) • May want to trace an outline of the object • Make a dichotomous key for all objects in your bag.

  14. Key Format Example • A. Item is round………………………go to 2 B. Item is not round…………………….go to 3 Better • A. Item flat on 2 sides…………..…go to 2 B. Item is not flat on 2 sides…….go to 5 • A. Item is > than 4 inches in diameter….4 B. Item is < than 4 inches in diameter… 3 • A. Item has “Frozen Four” on one flat side and “Bauer” on the other side of flat side………….Hockey discus. B.Does not have any writing on it….go to 6

  15. Warm-up 05/18 • Use the Key Provided to Key out a leaf. • Write the Leaf # and Species on your sheet.

  16. Agenda 05/18 • Greenhouse • Finish and Grade each others Dichotomous Keys • Intro to PNW Broadleaved Trees and Shrubs • Use the key.

  17. Grading the Keys • Switch bags and keys with another group. • Use their key to identify the items. • Write the scientific name next to the object name. • Give them a grade from 1-10 on their descriptions and accuracy of the items.
