Wolfson, Mary Holcomb, Arizona Health Sciences Library Laurie Soloff, Program in Integrative Medicine The University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona Andrew Weil, MD, Founding Director, UA Program in Integrative Medicine • PIM Book Collection before Partnership • Characteristics • 300+ titles, overlap with AHSL unknown • Housed in PIM facility (several blocks from AHSL) • Books not organized by National Library of Medicine (NLM) principle • Materials available only at PIM • Concerns: • Books to remain at PIM facility • Circulation control needed • Desire to share information on PIM philosophy and methods with larger campus community • Elements of PIM/AHSL Partnership • AHSL to catalog PIM materials using NLM classification & medical subject headings (MeSH), integrating into shelf list order with all AHSL materials • AHSL to process these materials (labels, etc.) • PIM to keep its collection at its facility • Books to be represented in AHSL online catalog (ALOE) • Cataloging of PIM books to be integrated into AHSL workflow • The University of Arizona Program in Integrative Medicine (PIM) • Founded by Dr. Andrew Weil in 1994 with the following ideals: • Patient/Practitioner partnership in the healing process • Integration of conventional & alternative methods to facilitate the body's innate healing response • Consideration of all factors that influence wellness & disease • Inquiry driven & open to new paradigms • Education and Research • 1997, two year postdoctoral fellowships to educate physicians to use of the best of complementary and conventional therapies • Since then, the program has expanded to include: • Research fellowship for pre- and post-doctoral students • Distance learning program • One one-month rotations for visiting medical students and residents • The PIM Library provides an important resource for PIM Students, faculty and staff, as well as for many other university programs PIM’s Bob Epstein, Volunteer Program Coordinator, with Laurie Soloff, Academic Coordinator, standing beside a section of recently cataloged books in the PIM offices • Results • PIM collection cataloged and given distinctive labels by AHSL staff • Collection housed at PIM facility but available to UA community • PIM & AHSL collections integrated via shared online catalog, making all materials from both collections searchable • Developed effective collaboration between library departments (reference librarian classified and provided subject analysis & technical services librarian managed technical details and physical processing) • Future Plans • Install PIM circulation station • Develop ongoing protocol for adding new titles • Collaborate on collection development http://www.ahsl.arizona.edu/ http://integrativemedicine.arizona.edu/ PIM AHSL
