PUSHING BOUNDARIES SAGLC & SACOFA 2010/11/18
By the end of … • Influence National Lotteries Distribution Fund & National Development Agency • Effect change in how and where they fund
Currently… • Stronger participation-civil society • Research completed
However… • No initial interest was shown to work together with community grant makers • We were seen as intermediaries who harness money • Political influence
Ideally • We would like • Because • The Lottery and government agencies to use grant makers to assist them in the development process • Allow for a strong representation on their boards to drive the sector in our country. • Represent huge groups of grantees • Stronger administratively • Access to international funding
Accomplished • Various meetings held with organisations with vested interest • Approached stronger institutions for assistance • Broadened the sphere of influence by taking bigger grant makers on board
Lessons learnt… • More coordination of the process • Include larger and stronger groups • Assist with wider funding support
Lessons learnt con… • Guard against self interest • Take time to negotiate • Not lessening the importance and commitment to the process • Manner in which we partner • Provide proper mandates • Larger organisations should not only look at own interest
What next… • Engage in better coordinated process • Work with academia to be able to deliver better research material • Strengthen Civil Society to participate.
