The Scottish Collections Network (SCONE) Gordon Dunsire presented at Information for Scotland 8 16 November 2001, Edinburgh
SCONE service • Developed during the RSLP SCONE project (ends May 2002) • Uses an extended version of the RSLP/UKOLN Collection Description schema • Collection level descriptions derived from existing databases (SLIR, ESH, CAIRNS) augmented by SEED project returns
Collection descriptions • Hierarchical and granular • Super-collections > Collection > Sub-collections • Information recorded at appropriate level • e.g. Opening hours • Cascaded down to sub-collections by default • Some content standards under development • Subject headings, physical description, etc.
Future developments • Complete coverage of collections in Scottish libraries • Coverage of significant collections about Scottish topics • Extend to archives and museums domains • Core service of Scottish information portals and collaborative collection management • Local updating of collection descriptions via SCAMP
