    1. UAMG1043 Interpersonal Communication Presented By Ihediwa Samuel Chibundu (Lecturer) Faculty of Arts and Social Science

    2. Communication

    3. Communication Communication is a social activity, where people create and exchange meanings in response to what they experienced. Communication means that information is passed from one place to another and from person to person. (Miller 1951)

    4. Types of Communication Mass Communication Group Communication Corporate Communication International Communication Intra-personal communication Interpersonal communication Etc.

    5. An argument between a couple concerning the attitude and behavior of their son. A seminar discussion between a speaker and four of her students. A telephone call to a hypermarket to enquire about the price of a particular product. A letter from a daughter to her parents about her experiences of working abroad. President Obama addressing 10,000 guests at the White House. The Christmas Day broadcast. Sitting in a cinema watching a film. Reading a daily newspaper.

    6. Interpersonal Communication Is the communication that takes place between two persons who have an established relationship. The people are in some way “connected.” The verbal and nonverbal interaction between two (or sometimes more than two) interdependent people”

    7. IPC is something you do everyday: Talking with co-workers Giving or responding to a compliment. Making new friends. Asking for a date. Communicating through instant messaging

    8. Build, maintain and repair relationships. Breaking off relationship Applying for a job Giving directions Persuading

    9. Why Study IPC? There are two benefits of studying IPC. They are:- Intellectual Benefits Practical Benefits

    10. Intellectual Benefits Refers to interaction which plays a major and significant part of our daily life. Liberal arts education IPC helps us to understand a large part of human interaction and human relationships. E.g. Talk to friends, making new friends, asking for a date, breaking off relationships, applying for jobs etc….

    11. Practical Benefits An extremely practical arts. Effectiveness of your personal, social, and professional life depends on IPC skills and knowledge. e.g. Applying for job. “Communication & IPC skills” are ‘very important’ in hiring decisions. Morreale, Osborn, & Pearson (2000) & Morreale, & Pearson (2008).

    12. Nature of IPC Interpersonal communication involves Dyadic primacy Dyadic coalitions Dyadic consciousness

    13. Dyads: two-person relationship. They are always central to interpersonal relationships – a process referred to as dyadic primacy. Triads: groups of three people

    14. Dyadic Primacy Example. A and B (dyads) have been roommates for their first two years in college. Increase in expenses made them to ask C to join them and become their third roommate. Now a triad exists but the original dyad has not gone away. They are now triads (A, B, and C)

    15. A and B are football players and talk a lot about sports. A and C are both studying communication and talk about their classes. B and C belong to the same religious club and frequently discuss the club’s activities. The dyad formed naturally depends on the situation and dyad will probably change over time.

    16. Dyadic Coalitions A Dyadic Coalition is two person relationship formed by members of a larger group for achieving a mutually desired benefit or goal. Coalitions whether in the family, among friends or at work – maybe productive or unproductive.

    17. E.g. of Productive. Two workers: Form a coalition to develop a program for improving worker morale. Two teachers: undertake research E.g. of Unproductive. Grandparent: Develops coalition with a grandchild against the child’s parents, causing all sorts of family difficulties, parental resentment and jealousy.

    18. Dyadic Consciousness As your relationship develops, a dyadic consciousness emerges. You begin to see yourself as part of a pair, a team or a couple. It’s almost as if a third party enters the picture.

    19. As the relationship becomes more involved, this third party takes on greater importance. Often individuals sacrifice their own desires or needs for the well-being of “the relationship.”

    20. Characteristics of IPC Six (6) Xteristics of IPC are:- IPC involves Interdependent individuals. It is inherently relational. It exists on a continuum. Involves verbal and non verbal messages. Exists in various forms. Varies in effectiveness
