Importance of PDHPE • Teaching PDHPE in school is highly significant to the development of young individuals of primary school • PDHPE has the goal of enabling children to become happy citizens of the world who are socially, mentally, physically and spiritually healthy . • Unfortunately, PDHPE is often viewed to be “not as important” as other subjects such as Mathematics and English. This short presentation will show you why PDHPE is pertinent to children’s education and livelihood It enables us to mentally grow in accordance with our environment and surroundings It reinforces the development of vital skills like communication & problem solving
What is PDHPE? PDHPE is concerned with: • Physical, social, cognitive and emotional growth and development • Development/maintenance of positive social relationships • How to make appropriate health choices • Living/learning in a safe secure environment • Promoting an active lifestyle • Development of fundamental movement skills and gross and fine motor skills
Why is PDHPE important It teaches students the importance of keeping healthy through good nutrition and by being active. It helps to prevent many of the current health issues that have arisen due to children taking up a more sedentary lifestyle, resulting in a lack of body movement. By teaching PDHPE from an early age, children learn to adapt to a better lifestyle and to make healthy choices.
PDHPE is so much more than just sport, as this area of study looks at the child as a whole and provides for the intellectual, social, emotional, physical and spiritual development of students (www.schools.nsw.edu.au) The notion of P.D.H.P.E is enthralling for children. This is because the primary years are an important time for the development of fundamental movement skills. Thus, it is essential to advocate teaching primary P.D.H.P.E.
