The sea is ancient Greece Click me • Homer is a blind poet from the Dorian or Greek Dark Ages (1100 to 700 BCE/BC) who tells us about the Greeks and the Sea • Homer tell us of a two part epic about the sea • Iliad– The hero travels to the Trojan war by boat • Odyssey – The hero tries to travel home by boat • This ancient tale shows the strong ties of the Greeks to the sea.

The benefits of living by the sea Click Here • Allows for the cultural diffusion of Hellenic (Greek) civilization to Egypt • Fosters a seafaring and trading tradition (exemplified in Homer’s poems) • Leads to a change from a barter economy to a monetary based economy • Leads to the development of naval power (Athenian Navy)

The Land (not so good) Click Here • Limited arable land and dry climate • Fosters the development of semi-isolated city-states (Athens and Sparta) • Inhibits the unification of Hellenic civilization under one government or ruler until Phillip of Macedonia conquers the Balkan Peninsula (359 BCE/BC) • Requires colonization of eastern Mediterranean basin to support a growing population
