The Dark Age Defining a dark time! Click me • The dark age is a period of time within the Medieval Era from 500 CE/AD to 1300 CE/AD • The dark age begins with the “fall of the Roman Empire” was actually a gradual decline from 400 to 700 CE/AD, and ends around 1000 CE/AD • This time can be called either the “Early Middle Ages” or the “Dark Age” There’s a lot more of this coming up!
When things go bad …… They go very bad! Click Here • The absence of the Roman Empire led to difficultly for people to find a cohesive unity as an integrated society. What does this mean? • There was a breakdown of law and order (now under local control), • There was economic turmoil (trade was stifled or stopped altogether) • There was a significant cultural decline (without trade there can be no cultural diffusion or exchanging of ideas) • There was a lack of institutional protection (no national government to protect the people; only protection by the local leader) Cultural diffusion? Not so much in the Middle Age

Romans verses Germanics Tribes(How did the Germanic Tribes do things?) • They did not live in an established urban center • Tribal loyalty was to the chiefs; chiefs were selected via familial succession and military leaders by merit) • There were laws of succession (every man’s child is his heir; laws set forth partition of property in complex situations) • There was trial by ordeal (survival equals innocence – think witch trials) Click Here It’s not called Witchduck Road for nothing!
