Setting -Rural NZ - Likely to be around 1900-1910. • We call this era the Edwardian era as King Edward VII was king of England then. • NZ was still very closely linked with Britain People still believed in the strong ideals of class structures even though many people had migrated to NZ to get away from Britain’s rigid class system.
What is a class system? • When people in society are organised into different groups, generally this is determined by wealth. • We call this a social hierarchy. • Class systems generally had a - Upper class. - middle class. -lower class.
Important Question…..How is this setting important to the themes in the story?
Narration • The narration in The Doll’s House is eye of God. It is a 3rd person narrative. • It is interesting because it is from the perspective of the people in the area. It talks about the characters in the way that most people in the story would talk about them. “ This was awful enough. But where was Mr Kelvey? Nobody knew for certain.”
