  1. Spreadsheet(Visible Calculator) Arrangement of data using rows and columns

  2. Spreadsheets • Reports on past, present, and use to make future projections • Answers “What if” questions • Common forms included Visicalc (late 1970s) and Microsoft Excel (today) • File types • Excel 2003- .xls • Excel 2007 & 2010 - .xlsx • Not compatible without saving down or installing a conversion patch • Open Office Calc; open document format (ods)

  3. How Can We Use Spreadsheets?

  4. Report on Existing Conditions • Accounting Worksheets • Sports Statistics • Survey and experiment results • Consolidating Reporting

  5. Planning Tool to Make Predictions • Set up a budget (What if) • Loan analysis (amortization) • Change business strategy • Modeling

  6. Other Uses • Database Manager • Integrate with other functions (charting, merge/insert in a wp doc)

  7. Terms Workbook = File; unlimited worksheets in a workbook; limited only by memory Cell – intersection of rows and columns Input Cell – cell used in formulas, value is part of the formula or function Output Cell – cell that displays the results of the formula or function Row – rows are horizontal; labels run vertically down the side, labeled with numbers; how many? Column – columns are vertical; labels run horizontally across the top, labeled with letters; how many?

  8. Terms Cont. Cell Reference – location of cells using column heading (letters) and row headings (numbers); upper left? Template – “skeleton” spreadsheet with labels, formulas, and macros but no data or incomplete data(find templates on hard drive & online)

  9. Data Types Label – describes data using words. Numbers can be in the Label: For example: Grade 10, Room 215, Part #’s Value – data represented by a number Formula – combination of cell references and values to produce an output Functions – pre-programmed operations used in formulas

  10. Order of Operations • Parenthesis( ) Alter the order • Exponents (caret) ^ 2^3=8 • Multiplication* / left to rightDivision • Addition + - left to rightSubtraction Complex formulas use multiple operators and precedence decisions

  11. Solve These 2+3*2 = 27/3^2*2 = 2*(3+6) = 4^(3-3) =

  12. Creating Formulas Steps: • Select an output cell • Start each formula with an = • Write the formula using cell references when possible

  13. Graphing Data • Column: shows data changes over a period of time or illustrates comparisons among items. Rectangles are vertical. • Bar: illustrates comparisons among individual items. Rectangles are horizontal. • Line: shows trends in data at equal intervals. • Pie: shows the size of items that make up a data series, proportional to the sum of the items. It always shows only one data series and is useful when you want to emphasize a significant element in the data.
