  3. “The Old Nurse’s Story” • Questions/concerns/comments? • Support for reading as focused on children: • Rosamond’s mother dies in childbirth and “asked [Hester], on her death-bed, never to leave Miss Rosam0nd” (Gaskell 4) • Rosamond is missing and Hester “began to wish [she] had never left [her] darling” (Gaskell 12) • Finding Rosamond/story of her absence pages 13-15 • Discussion/appearance of the ghost child 15, 17, 20, 23 • Support for past/revenge/regret? • Focus on ending and Miss Furnivall

  5. Homework 2 • One page • Focus on an element of fiction (chosen from Chapter 3 that you read for today) • Discuss it in terms of how it adds/develops the MEANING of “The Ghost in Cap’n Brown’s House” • Two part Works Cited again

  6. Writing Essays about Literature • What is literature? • Why do we study it? • Elements for analysis: • POV • Narrator • Setting • Characterization • Form (framing narratives, etc.) • Symbolism • Irony • Etc.

  7. Essay 1 • 750 words (about 3 pages) plus a works cited page • Analyze a story/novel we have read (up to Friday of next week) • Use an element of fiction to develop your argument about meaning • Support your argument with one critical source from the library databases • Assignment sheet will offer prompts

  8. Looking Forward—HW3 • Due Tuesday, June 10 • Identify your element of fiction • Provide a tentative thesis • Outline textual support • More developed=more useful commentary
